the peeps that keep on this idea refuse to acknowledge the existence of like rush limbaugh. the klan had public access shows! im supposed to think those guys were the outliers tho to soothe guys that were friendly with like karl rove or whatever and don't wanna reflect on what that means

i refuse to accept both as a factual matter and a political point that republican staffers were historically any less openly racist in private conversations. strom thurmond was some of their boss! pat buchanan was on msnbc! thinking their underlings were LESS comfortable talking like that is naive!

I read the piece. You shouldn't. He dismisses the "No Kings" protests as liberals in blue cities. He invokes Rosa Parks, as if rural white people in the 60s loved everything that the movement then was doing. "We need a movement but not this one" is a core centrist tact these days.

"I miss when the republicans weren't racist" is just one of the most wild takes unless you're a 90 year old person lol.

Gonna stop responding to people trying to make vibe explanations to me about the 00s and just posting 80s-00s era controversies today.

Starting with: Fox news used to love photoshopping jewish journalists into der sturmer like creations:
Journalist Jacques Steinberg edited to look like an antisemitic cartoon.

Holy shit they're going to blame Trump's insane tariff war and instability causing the market to crash with "AI is so good it's already taking millions of jobs" lol

Amazing, seemless transition.

Some straight talk out of Waller. Less and less sugar-coating as we go on.

im not communicating what i mean by weird one well; cannery row and east of eden are bangers but also were mainstream successes. OMAM was the biggest of all and kind of sucks. just a lot of his stuff suffers from too much righteous fury and really that is what i meant by weird

It's a flattening thing. There used to be overt racism for racism's sake for the overt racism enjoyers, "reluctant, pragmatic" racism for prosperity's sake for the "pragmatic" racism enjoyers, and racism denial for the racism non-enjoyers to have semi-plausible deniability.

Now there's just the one

I think what we’re all struggling with today is that yes they were always racist but in a slightly different form. It’s like how Garfield used to look different but was still Garfield
Old Garfield from the 1970’s

as much as Babb was done dirty it has always stuck out to me that grapes of wrath had a certain je ne sais quoi re: righteous fury and socialist call to arms that Whose Names Are Unknown was never gonna have. for every sweet thursday weirdness he wrote a banger

yeah 15-20 years ago they didn't have group chats so they didn't write stuff like that down, they'd just say it out loud to eachother at parties, usually without a paper trail

For those tempted to say Young Republicans have always been this way, they really have not. When I worked on campus and did bipartisan college events after, they were very much not like this.

That’s why groups like YCT and eventually TPUSA formed — because Young Republicans weren’t radical enough.

EXCLUSIVE: Thousands of leaked messages show leaders of Young Republican groups joking about gas chambers, slavery and rape in a private Telegram chat.

like, go listen to a Limbaugh broadcast and the "AIDS update" was that some sort of closeted bigotry that was more respectable than what we have today?
rootrot1519.bsky.social
amanda is doing more than that though. she is saying that hers is a story of redemption, of growth and change for us to learn from. and that doesnt seem true at all! instead what she actually says is she was duped by people who hid their true views! there are very different lessons to learn there!

amanda, what you have highlighted is less that you have grown and changed and more that you were duped when you were young. that distinction is important for how we help redeem people who are doing harm
rootrot1519.bsky.social
what her posts do though, is cloud people's awareness of the issue. they paint a rosy picture of a more innocent past, a past that did not exist. rather than highlight how she became aware, she offers people an excuse for not seeing it until today - "it wasn't like this before!"
rootrot1519.bsky.social
i totally agree with her that people can change and want to see my enemies redeemed! but what she is talking about is less that she changed and more that she saw the truth about her fellows. she followed the path of awareness to acknowledgement, confession, repentence, and reparation
rootrot1519.bsky.social
the actual truth about this stuff is that young republicans have always been gutter racists, but our culture was much more permissive towards that attitude. the only way to be a "young republican" during the lead up to iraq and NOT hear people talk about "glassing the middle east" is self-deception
rootrot1519.bsky.social
i don't think we need misinformation like hers. she's saying that republicans weren't like this before, which is false. she contradicts that in her own thread, saying "oh they were like this but were better at hiding it"

she isnt even saying she changed as much as she was duped
amandamarcotte.bsky.social
My parents' generation was super racist, but they took pains to hide it from us. So a lot of young conservatives in the 90s and early aughts were earnest small government and/or evangelical types.

As I said, the overt racists and radicals had to form their own orgs.

There are several potential answers to “what would the government want with all that compute power?” but I can’t think of any that I’m thrilled about
