Advocating for the return of trains on Vancouver Island
Sooke is a great example of why we need to keep our rail corridors for rail.

Conversion of corridors to trails as a means to preserve them for the future is a fallacy.

Restore Island Rail Society's Northern Director Chris returned the Courtenay Station Heritage Commemoration plaque to Mayor Bob Wells of the City of Courtenay today.

The mayor expressed his appreciation to finally have the plaque back after it had been missing for two years.

Langford to View Royal in 10 minutes

Vancouver Island Mayors and dignitaries travelled from View Royal to Langford in 10 minutes going 10-15km / hour.

Now imagine going much faster on New tracks, riding a Modern Regional Electric Train with accessible level boarding platforms.

I've never seen the Vancouver Island Rail Corridor wiki page get updated as much as it has this last year as contractors and consultants are hired to help create a vision for the corridor! Let's hope for good outcomes!

Restore Island Rail as part of 'Nation-Building'

As an ardent fan of train travel and a longtime supporter of bringing back Island rail service, I wholeheartedly support the push to do so as a social service.

Tell them you want trains running on the tracks.

View Royal, like other municipalities, are updating their Transportation Master Plan. It's important that the corridor is mentioned!

"Service on Vancouver Island will resume once the track is brought back to safe operating standards."

I was today old when I felt confident to say that a National subsidy for rail to operate on Vancouver Island sits in wait.
What region will be the first to tap into that?

For each rider, you get reduced parking demand.

Trains will always attract more riders than other forms of transit because they are safer, accessible, comfortable, and faster running on their own right-of-way.

Commuter Rail Focus (Duncan to Victoria). The initial investment and operational focus should be on restoring service to the highest-demand segment from Duncan to Victoria.

This aligns with the most pressing transportation need identified in public discourse and the data.

Why is it so hard to make Metro Vancouver's only train line better?

"TransLink doesn't own the rail line."

The more we learn about railway operations, the clearer it becomes: owning the corridor is the key. We own ours!

Don’t let rails to trails group pillage the rail corridor

The destruction of our rail corridor in favour of an extra-wide bike path is foolish short-term thinking, since trails can coexist with our railway.

Vancouver Island is Provincial

Canada's expected $1/2 Trillion infrastructure investment is, per-capita, about $12,000 per Canadian citizen. That amounts to $11 billion from Vancouver Island residents. Invest in this railway. It's time.

Building an extension to Duke Point Nanaimo will increase Freight revenues and increase ridership substantially.

While a Duke Point extension doesn’t yet exist, the combined boost in freight volumes and passenger ridership it would bring makes it a worthy investment.
