Could be. Next year you might plant a separate patch of sunflowers well away from those that you protect for your personal harvest, free of the annoyances and away from the apple trees as well. An offering for the birds, just as you have made for the black bears.

Stellar's jays are known to dislike the sounds of wind chimes, which can help deter them from your apple crop.
Shiny visual deterrents are also disliked. Hang shiny objects or decoys around the trees to make an unwelcoming environment, such as food can lids hanging by strings that move in a breeze.

Stellar's are omnivores, but seem to have a preference for seeds, when available. Black oil sunflower seeds (in feeders or directly from the seed heads) are especially favored. Maybe planting sunflowers somewhat away from the apple orchard would entice them to a more favored meal? Just a thought.

Do they eat the 2" hole deep enough to reach the apple seeds at the core, or do you think it is only the flesh of the fruit that they desire.

That was a wise decision. That's unfortunate behavior from the Stellar's jays. They were probably new for you, with Maryland and the East coast not part of their range.
Like all corvids they are very smart. But as beautiful as they are, you certainly don't want them destroying your apples.

I guess Vance and the Trump inner circle are attempting to argue that bribery isn't illegal or even wrong when they do it. I guess we already knew this, however, when Donald addepted the Qatari $400 million Boeing 747 flying Palace bribe.
