One year after the fall of Bashar al-Assad, many Syrians are again living in fear.

Where the Sunni majority bore the brunt of the Assad regime's crimes, now it's the country's minorities who are being persecuted.

Can the country unite? Or will sectarian divisions tear it apart?

My report
A year after al-Assad’s fall, celebration turns to fear and division
Last December’s elation in Damascus has vanished as religious minorities are scared to speak out against Ahmed al-Sharaa’s new regime

It is again particularly blatant as Russia claims to have 'liberated' (= occupied) cities where fighting is still ongoing.

News agencies, on which outlets heavily rely, often stick to conveying russian disinformation as is, without adding the necessary context that would show Moscow's propaganda.
In the name of balanced reporting, news outlets often cite Russian media sources verbatim, thereby helping to spread misinformation. The Barents Observer contextualizes Russian propaganda by adding the sentence, "That statement is not true," which prevents Russian lies from being perpetuated.

Among the 28 points of the initial Washington/Kremlin plan, one was a general amnesty for war crimes.

This video footage shows Russian troops killing five Ukrainian soldiers, prisoners of war.

This adds to the several hundreds such crimes committed by Russia.

The Witkoff-Dmitriev plan puts Zelensky in a familiar spot. He can accept Moscow’s terms, or Ukraine can keep fighting a war few think it can win.

It’s the same choice Ukrainians faced in February 2022 - so don’t expect the answer from Kyiv to be any different this time.
