The scene is an Edwardian dining room. A man in evening dress is clutching his heart while a woman looks down at him, perhaps in shock, holding a length of white material to her face. In the foreground, the grey, ghostly form of another (or the same?) bearded man emerges from under the table and holds up a disc of light in the centre of which is an intensely staring, Gorgon-like woman's face.

A night watchman of NYC's Grand Opera House sees the ghost of robber baron James Fisk, Jr. Fisk owned the opera house with partner James Gould, & had been laid out in state there after his 1872 murder by his mistress's other lover #phantomsfriday
Engraving from The Illustrated Police News (Boston), issue No. 432, February 4, 1875. The scene depicts the interior of the Grand Opera House of NYC. A frightened night watchman recoils in terror from a figure appearing in a private box. The watchman, holding a lantern that swings from his hand as he stumbles backward, stares wide-eyed at the apparition. Inside the ornate, curtained private theater box stands the spectral image of James Fisk Jr., dressed in a military-style coat with epaulets (he had been named a colonel of the 9th NY National Guard Infantry Regiment), arm extended as though pointing or accusing.

Anne Boleyn's spectral carriage is said to race past Blickling Hall every May 19th. At Hever Castle, her ghost is seen gliding over the River Eden bridge on Christmas Eve and under the oak tree where she and Henry VIll once courted.

In some variations of the Banshee, she is said to be the #spirit of a murdered woman. 🪦 The Scottish version, aka the Bean Nighe, is more specifically the #ghost of a woman who died during childbirth. #PhantomsFriday

A pirate treasure is rumored to be buried somewhere on Mississippi’s Deer Island, but it has never been found. According to local legend, this treasure is guarded by a headless skeleton who chases away anyone who gets too close to its hiding place. #PhantomsFriday

The Cauld Lad of Hilton (Co Durham) is as much household #fairy as he is #ghost. A tale of a murdered boy's body being hidden in a pond had him moaning 'Cauld, aye cauld, forever more!' But, in fairy-like fashion, when clothes were laid out for him, he quit the castle.

"Adventure and Vision of a Pike's Peak Tourist"

A tourist at Pike's Peak was injured by a fall, and overnight was visited by "beautiful and passing strange" phantoms of "some very nice ladies" who were "exceedingly delicate and diaphanous". #phantomsfriday
