What’s a western fantasy without some cryptids and creatures? I’ve been thinking about the magic in this world lately and dipping into American folklore, so I had a go at a scene that’d been nagging me for months now.

4 page comic. In the first panel, the two main characters (Sofia and Anne) are sitting near a campfire in a clearing, packing up their belongings. In the second panel, Sofia loads her rifle for the day. The third panel zooms in on Anne, folding her satchel, as a fog creeps around her. Everything seems quiet... Then in the final panel, a creature cries in the woods, surprising the girls.

Anne immediately touches the ground, her hands glowing from her magic use, she says, "It's mourning."
Cynical, Sofia tells her, "More like baiting." Markings appear around Anne's face. They seem to glow. She looks at Sofia, somewhat shocked.
In the fourth panel, Sofia explains further, "Crawlers mimic grief. They cry like children and wail like widows to get you close. Whatever you think it's doing, it's not that anymore."
In the fifth panel, Anne asks, "You've ever wondered why the grieve? Why they roam near old places or near old bones?"
Sofia puts her hat on, covering her eyes, "I don't wonder about things that want to wear my skin."
In the last panel, she looks down at her rifle "I just aim and shoot." Her rifle clicks, emphasizing her statement.

Anne digs into the dirt, hands shaking, "They weren't always like this, you know--something twisted them."
Sofia, already standing replies with a coldness, "You mean that same something that's inside you?"
This response shocks Anne, but Sofia continues, now standing near her horse, "I've buried a handful of hunters who never had the luxury to wonder why these creatures 'grieve' and I don't intend on joinin' them."
Sofia turns to Anne, a slight scowl on her face, "We're not safe until we're out of these woods."
The creature cries out again; this time it's more like a cry. Anne turns toward it. Her markings appear to be faded.

Anne releases the dirt she'd dug up.
Sofia, turns one more time, "We move now and talk later."
Anne reaches back for her hood.
She covers her head saying, "then let's move."
They mount Sofia's horse, and Anne looks back one more time. Silently grieving the wailing creature. They take off on horseback.

I was considering making a little sheet about the world. But essentially, the Marked are a rare group of people who can use the world’s magic differently than the Common. 😊 there’s a lot more involved but that’s the general idea.

In this page, they find the problem. In the first panel, they find the air leak. In the second panel, Asami smiles, “Whoa. Did I just fix an engine?”
Proud, Hiroshi turns to her, placing a hand on her shoulder, “You sure did, my little engineer.”
In the next panel, Hiroshi smiles and says, “You’re going to be a great one, someday.”
Asami, looks up at him, blushing when he finally tells her he’s proud of her.
The memory fades away.

Back to the present, Asami’s fond smile fades away while she holds back tears.
Teardrops fall onto the page as she tries to swipe it, smudging Hiroshi’s name in the process.
In the next panel, she starts sobbing.
In the final panel, she sits at the desk, covering her face, she finally says, “I love you, dad.”

This second page is a memory. The color is in a sepia tone. In the first panel, the same blueprint is on a work table. In the establishing panel, a young Asami stands next to a Satomobile with Hiroshi. She asks him, “What’s wrong with it?”
Hiroshi responds who a hand on his chin, “the engine’s… being a pain. It starts, sometimes, but then it sputters out.”
In the next panel, Asami asks, “Like it’s running out of breath?”
Hiroshi smiles, and says,” exactly, I’ve checked the spark plugs, and even cleaned out the carburetor. Nothing obvious is broken.”

In the next panel, Hiroshi and Asami are leaning close into the car. Asami asks, “could it be, like, it’s not getting enough food-I mean, fuel?”
Hiroshi responds with, “That was my thought too, but the fuel pump’s working just fine. The tank’s full, it’s getting fuel, but it doesn’t seem to be using it right.”
Asami turns to him, “What happens right before it stops?”
Hiroshi responds with a smile, “It revs up and chokes.”
In the next panel, Asami thinks out loud with a hand on her chin,”Hmm… like when I try to blow into a balloon but there’s a whole in it?”
In the next panel, Hiroshi raises his eyebrows, pouting at the engine, “Maybe- oh! A leak. It could be an air leak.”

Asami smiles in the first panel, asking, “Like it’s taking in the wrong air?”
Hiroshi responds, hand pointing, “Exactly if there is a vacuum leak, the engine would get too much air and not enough fuel in the mix. That could throw off the entire system.”
In the next panel, Asami, stands next to the Satomobile, “So, it’s like trying to drink through a straw with holes?”
Hiroshi walks back to the workbench, “Pretty much. That could explain the sputtering. He picks up a can of cleaner, “This cleaner might help us find the leak.”
In the next sequence, Hiroshi sprays some valves in the engine while he and Asami start the car.
