Science takes time - a lot of time. Time that is more and more difficult to make available because of increased workloads. Time that exceeds the temporary contracts of postdocs and PhDs.

I have been thinking about this conversation we are having about data and grants - and I think what motivates it is the question of "who is supposed to pay for preliminary data?" If you're a junior prof, it can seem like a catch-22: I need money to generate data, but I can't get money without data.
