On Twitter I would click on a tweet about music or culture or whatever by someone explicitly or only peripherally political and, looking for witty & whimsical discourse, the top 5 replies would be blue-check red-assed chuds spewing their tedious sludge.
This is not just revisionist history, it's ignorant of reality. Activists didn't leave Twitter because they "thought they would be more effective" somewhere else, they left because Elon made it clear that he would *deliberately undermine their influence."

Why make shit up?
I’m not upset. I’m bemused that activists thought they would be more effective by giving up a platform where they had considerable influence and self segregating on a site almost no one else reads.

The President of the United States unilaterally levied a tax on all of us and is redistributing our taxes to a core segment of his supporters.
Trump: "I'm delighted to announce this afternoon that the US will be taking a small portion of the hundreds of billions of dollars we receive in tariffs ... and we're going to be giving and providing it to the farmers in economic assistance. We love our farmers. The farmers like me ... $12 billion"

Sauer saying something is unconstitutional because it "would be unconstitutional under Justice Scalia's dissent" is a remarkably cogent statement of the Roberts Court's approach to precedent.

All I ever asked was enough nuance to convey awareness that an organized cohort of bad-faith actors stood ready to use every cry of “Woke Wolf!” as reason to amp up the wolf-hunting activity.
Sharon: “The technocapitalists are awful: but do you think that the intellectual climate wasn't primed for this nonsense?”

Helen: “The answer is no, it’s not the job of journalists to never criticize the left in case it drives Jon Lonsdale to be more sexist.”

Is that the question that was asked?

Q: Should Netflix be allowed to buy Warner Brothers?

TRUMP: That's a question. They have a very big market share. I'll be involved in that decision

It’s Boulevardier season!
A three-ingredient, perfectly cozy, gorgeously-hued cocktail that's become my absolute favorite. It's a cousin to the Negroni, but it uses bourbon or rye instead of gin. The result is more mellow and 100% perfect for right now.

Trainwreck? In October 2024, The Economist called Biden's economy "the envy of the world."
BARTIROMO: What are you expecting the president's economic message to be?

SEN. McCORMICK: I think the message is that we inherited a trainwreck from the Biden administration and we made a lot of progress

VARNEY: Do you like FIFA soccer as much as President Trump?

MIKE JOHNSON: Well, you know they say ADIDAS stands for All Day I Dream About Spankings. And {chuckling like an idiot} backwards it stands for Spankings All Day Is Definitely American. So, yes, of course.
VARNEY: Do you work 18 hours a day?

MIKE JOHNSON: More. More. And I have to, because President Trump works 21 hours a day.

The Trump administration has changed which holidays qualify for free entrance to national parks, removing two holidays celebrating Black people and adding the president’s birthday.

This is bit of horeshoeing for cerebral men *of a certain age* . . . and I’m pretty sure I agree with it.
Something I wonder about is if the much ballyhooed shift of Gen Z men to Trump (and to influencers like Andrew Tate) is a perverse consequence of this. Shielded from bullying throughout school, bullies in media then seem empowering and thrilling to them rather than threatening or exhausting
it is an underrated miracle of the 21st century that we really did massively, massively reduce bullying in schools

This is exactly what we need! Will all this stuff work? No! But we need to TRY THINGS.

One thing about the Biden admin. is that, two or three levels down, there were tons of smart, focused, pro-social people doing great things that never rose to the level of a headline.

Conversely, an enormous amount of the damage Trumpies are doing never makes the news.

Another great thing here is the city encouraging businesses to create “employee-only“ areas, a subtlety to protect workers from ICE. ICE can enter “public” areas like restaurant seating areas, but need a judicial warrant for places that are off-limits to the public, like kitchens and break rooms.

Refugees and immigrants enrich communities & strengthen economies.

Scapegoating them to build political power relies on lies.

The attacks land where they meet ignorance and prejudice.
This resulted in a paradoxical outcome. Exclusionary beliefs & behaviors increased nationwide, but that increase was much SMALLER in the districts that received MORE refugees. Districts with FEWER refugees drove the national level threat.
