How do I know if CPR is needed in an emergency? When someone is in cardiac arrest, CPR sustains life until an AED can be attached. CPR + AED saves lives.

What's the difference between a cardiac arrest and a heart attack?

During a cardiac arrest, a person will be unresponsive and not breathing normally. During a heart attack, they will remain conscious and keep breathing. A heart attack can lead to cardiac arrest.

Have you ever wondered what a cardiac arrest looks like? Someone in cardiac arrest will be unresponsive and not breathing normally. This is a sign to call 111, start CPR, and attach an AED as soon as available.

An AED is a safe and simple-to-use device, used to restart the heart during cardiac arrest. They are lifesaving devices, and you can’t accidentally shock someone.

CPR alone is not enough, you need a shock from an AED to restart a heart.

Around 2000 people a year experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in Aotearoa. If you find someone unresponsive and not breathing normally:

Call 111
Start CPR by pushing Hard and Fast in the middle of the chest
Shock the heart with an AED ASAP
