I feel like the two dimensional political compass for local elected democrats are:

1. Mod or Prog

2. Interested in solving any local problems whatsoever vs deferring to local gatekeeper assholes.
It’s incredibly funny people flipped out about a guy running the most standard ass municipal government policy playbook imaginable.
Soon small businesses won’t have to wait for Small Business Saturday to get attention from their Mayor.

Some changes that they can look forward to:

This whole thread is so grim.
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

Some say the day of darth’s hibernation for the winter months is a sad day.

I prefer to look at the day with hope, because of the joy he will bring us all when he appears with the first green shoots of the spring.
ok it is time for me to hibernate for the season
i am thankful for all of u keeping me company here on the blue sky during this year
be well

The Scooby Doo Theory of Housing states that we can arrest housing price inflation if we only some clever kids are able to unmask the evil villain responsible for making rent go up.
I think this is mostly San Francisco finally shrugging off the pandemic, but it is *really* funny that rent prices in San Francisco shot up *immediately* after the city banned RealPage and other algorithmic price setting software.

My pre trends are incredible!

Any city leader serious about making their city welcoming and affordable for immigrants, young adults, young families, and others should have a plan for doubling their population in the next 20 years.

Otherwise any talk about affordability, sanctuary cities, etc is meaningless.

Important to understand the Epstein stuff and the fascism and the corruption are, in a lot of ways, really all the same story from different angles: powerful men who can and do abuse vulnerable people around them because they can, and because systems of elite accountability catastrophically failed

I keep beating this drum: the kind of people one thinks of as Silicon Valley "techbro" are so often finance people with an engineering cosplay habit, not actual technologists

Elon Musk was famously *never* a good coder and I can't believe he ever scienced a rocket either. But he craves that respect
the worst part is that for the people at the top "good at math"/sciencey is essentially a vibe one socially codes their way into by being minimally competent at informally discussing things actual math/science people do, unless (e.g.) Elon Musk has proven a theorem I didn't hear about.
I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

I’d even say that the same strain of thinking that has limited the reach of social welfare policies in the States - that these programs will get exploited by undeserving brown and black people - is a widely held belief in the parts of Western Europe where those policies are strongest.
Yes and yet several European countries are embracing a far-right worldview that would burn these policies to the ground, so let’s be not be smug or complacent here - particularly as Mamdani‘s pro-immigration stance is radical by European standards.
Europeans recognize Zohran Mamdani’s supposedly radical policies as ‘normal’ -- Critics of New York City’s mayor-elect have said his pledges of free bus service and universal childcare are unrealistic, but in Europe it’s a given www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...
