For my book I thought a lot about this position, which really does rest on a presumption, nurtured by first world, usually male perspectives that have been shaped by habituation to empowerment, that for something to count as victory it has to be total & complete; anything else is “failure.” +
And the most important aspect of that study is: WHY DID THEY FAIL? If we lose sight of the overwhelming fact that *everything the Luddites did FAILED* we are missing the most important lessons we can learn. Anyone calling for a "neo-Luddite" movement may as well want a "neo-phlogiston" movement.
Luddites, frame-breakers, Captain Swing rioters, women amassing in Manchester streets to demand potatoes (e.g. 1812)— all these were organized countermovements to a gathering universal commodification, c. 1750-1840. For that reason they call out now for our closest & most sympathetic form of study

This Chrismas, please give to poor-ass chickens and her babies who come to the door, despite being fed already. Spoiler: shoes were put on and another round of feed distributed. Status on writing? unknown.

I know I shared this yesterday already, but it took me a week to write so I'm sharing it again. It answers the question that I've been asked as a well known inventor of an information literacy model -- what does information literacy with ai look like open.substack.com/pub/mikecaul...

"History will not be kind to..." is the most toothless and pointless comment I can imagine. If there is no consequences or justice in the moments where these people are acting then what the fuck does it matter? History doesn't care. History is fallible and history has to keep being relearned.

@alfreds-mad-world.bsky.social finally saw one in the wild again after many years. I guess they do compilation issues now instead of new content? It's still cool to see it back in the grocery store, especially in an area that needs some "Mad"ness.
