Adam Scott still doesn't feel like he's made it, has a feeling like
waiting for success to be snatched away. As someone eagerly awaiting Severance season 2, this was surprising!

Relatable. I wouldn't have thought someone so successful would also feel this.

What do you all do to limit tech's addictive pull?

"The best technology of our day must be leveraged as a force to protect attention rather than exploit it."

I like the 4 key tenets here, centered on: protect attention, moderate your engagement, upskill don't doomscroll, and replace behaviors.
Steve Jobs thought devices would become 'a bicycle for the mind'—but their effect on our brains is similar to that of smoking and junk food
Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space lies our freedom and our power to choose our response. It's time to reclaim that space.

This paper looks really interesting and it's open access! Reposting so I know to come back and read.

The article aims "to nudge our discipline towards a more nuanced, inclusive, and socially-informed scientific understanding of multilingual experience"

Me too! Some good tips for using Bluesky here.
I learned some stuff about Bluesky I did not know by reading this.

Maybe worth passing it on to others so we can all start getting the full benefit of the 🦋.
Here’s some cool stuff you can do with Bluesky

Yes, this is one of the things I love about social media!

It's fun to talk with interesting people from around the world!
As someone who grew up online, it does depress me to see how many people genuinely can’t fathom why someone would want to be on social media beyond reasons linked to building clout so you can make money.

It’s fun to talk to interesting people from around the world. That’s always been my reason.

One thing I have been planning on doing is reading this book by Carlos Whitaker. He's on IG. He is faith based, but he shares a lot that is not faith based at all. I have the book, just haven't started it yet, but maybe this is just the push I need to get started.

I can relate, Kory. I also want to find a balance! I wonder what this could look like. I am almost afraid to even start asking!
+with this, and my brain hasn't stopped thinking about this. You all know I have thrived rambling on and and on, and learned so much from listening to others, but I wonder how we can find the balance in this. Because we also all know that part of the dumpster fire that we are currently in is+

#PopUpChat A3

I can't sight read very well, but I play 3 songs on the piano well enough to trick you and make you think that I know what I'm doing. I memorized them because I learned the notes so slowly that memorizing just came naturally.

I'd like to actually get better at sight reading. :)
OK final question! Q3 In our efforts to engage, connect, interact with each other on here. Please share something not connected to teaching that you'd love to learn more or discover about from possibly someone out in the big, blue skies OR share something you are willing to share about. #PopUpChat

A little late to the #PopUpChat but here it goes!

I'm Molly. I am a proponent of acquisition driven instruction/teaching with CI. I teach Spanish and ESL (as a volunteer). I also love to Lindy Hop!! And write. ✍️
OK, admitting i have no clue if this will work or not, but here we go! Starting #PopUpChat right now! Open to everyone, edus and non-edus, I'll try to keep the questions a little mix of both. So first off, please introduce yourself any way you want. Remember to use the hashtag!😁

Go off sis. I have a folder of articles about access and equity in language learning. SURPRISE (to no one) language learning is still an elite practice.
What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

No, you’re not actually “bad at languages”. Anyone can learn a new language at any age, but most public school world language classes aren’t set up for students to succeed.
What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

No other species has ever learned a human language (vocal or signed). Many species can learn to recognize—and even produce—impressive numbers of words/signs, but they can't seem to acquire the grammar.

There are so many tips, but the biggest one is this:

Give your character a want/need that operates outside of the plot. As Vonnegut said “Every character should want something, even if it’s just a glass of water.” But characters whose want involves the plot itself feel boring. Make it different.
Do you have any advice for writers that are struggling with developing character? I have a concept I’m passionate about and have a general idea of where i want to go with but I’m having trouble constructing who exactly my main character is.

The reason I'm so positive about aspiring writers is that I believe that:

* Anyone who can string a sentence together can write a story, script or book.

* Anyone who puts enough time, effort, and workshopping into it can write a GOOD story, script, or book.

* Anything finished can be fixed.
