That's very true, and is a trap a lot of people fall into. Even if they were making a factually correct claim, their attitude would be the issue and running down the details can get you way off base. But there is a social purpose to it sometimes, I think.
And, in some cases, to mock them and invite other people to do so, and thereby impose a cost for being bigoted.
The purpose of the fact check isn't to persuade the bigot, it's to stop the bigot from persuading somebody else.
