I am so shaken by this book.

Went trick or treating as myself last night. Because nothing seems to terrify some of the locals as much as an immigrant.

Friends and comrades made a crowdfunding page for my family.

It’s really hard to post this. I know that there are a lot of other important issues asking for money but things have gotten to the point where we need to open ourselves up to your support.

Thank you for your consideration.

"The day after he was stripped of the whip, the government slipped out some amendments to the planning and infrastructure bill that look very similar to Hinchliff’s own – including one that gives some protections to “irreplaceable habitats” such as chalk streams."

"Ok is the first Icelandic glacier to lose it status as a glacier. In the next 200 years all our glaciers are expected to follow the same path. This monument is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it.

This bit. This bit right here.

No, assholes, you do not have the right to take anything you can find on the internet and use it to feed your plagiarism machines.

Another reason to be grateful we're living in the EU.

”This language is not poetic, but ridiculous, sententious, blinded by self-love and pirouetting over a chasm. Vuong trivialises his subjects by refusing to look at them directly, to describe them patiently; he seems not to trust the strength of his own material, or the perceptions of the reader.”
Tom Crewe · My Hands in My Face: Ocean Vuong’s Failure
In On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous, Vuong considered himself to be reworking the traditional novel in a poetic vein....

I’ve never forgotten this picture from 2016 and how it completely reshaped my understanding of how the media covers protests.
But if a few people in masks start lighting stuff on fire? Then you have news. This creates an *enormous* attentional advantage towards the most violent and chaotic kind of protest.

I wrote 60000+ words for “Why Don’t Things Fall Up!” It took me months and months of work, and I got paid less than equivalent of two months of a teachers’ salary. It’s now being sold for £3 on Amazon so would have to sell many thousands of copies for me to start earning royalties.
’Unearned’ is so strange… No, we earned it, we did the work, we already WROTE THE BOOK. You didn’t do your work, promoting it. It’s your bit that is unearned, not ours.

Thank you, Edmund White.
Re-reading the 1980s...

Edmund White's A Boy's Own Story and its sequels.

Essential reading for this teenage boy. Had I read anything remotely like it before? I don't think so.

A door opened; some things started to make sense.

Tuesday 27th May. Lined up new episode of Backlisted for my commute. It was bloody brilliant! I thought Secret Diary of A. Mole 13¾ was just funny but intellectuals like @ninastibbe.bsky.social have convinced me it is actually searing critique of Mrs Thatcher etc. www.backlisted.fm/episodes/240...
