Today realized I love this Birds of Maya song because it has slurred non-sense lyrics and just gets right into the guitar riffing like CAN's Mother Sky does.

May as well tack this on here again. I've written some books and some of them are on sale, while others are merely, disappointingly, only for sale. bsky.app/profile/rkok...
Now until January 6: 45% off sale on all WSUP titles, including preorders of Dispatches from the Avant-Garage with code RHOLIDAY. Only like $23 for all that research and over 100 (!!) full-color images, truly a steal wsupress.wayne.edu/9780814350249/

My mom said when my Taiwanese cousin asked why Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving, instead of saying she didn't know, true to form, my mom made shit up. She told her a turkey flew into a fireplace and got bbq'ed and ever since then Americans having been giving thanks to that sacrificial turkey.

Grateful beyond words to have these gorgeous, generous blurbs from Charles Bernstein, Andrew Epstein, and @nicksturm.bsky.social with me on the back cover of Dispatches from the Avant-Garage + more beautiful blurbs from John Yau and William Barillas inside (copied into comments below) 😭

I created a "library squad" of 9th graders & I'm already thinking of making them t-shirts. Wish I was better at graphic design. These t-shirts need to make the other kids SO JEALOUS.

Heads up to photo nerds, if you hate the default ios photo processing and you wish someone would make an app that eschewed the whole denoise-and-microcontrast philosophy that dominates phone photography in 2025, you need moment pro 2

I'm reading submissions of short solstice writing for the next few days, so hold up your candles and walk into the woods.

In a couple of days I'm going to open a quick, experimental call for very short, solstitial submissions at @necessaryfiction.com, something I've wanted to do for the past couple of years but didn't quite get it together. Further details TK.

Been funny seeing people just learning that the NY Post is our campiest paper.

My sister and mine's biggest fear is f*cking up so badly at work (both teachers) that we land on the front page of the post with a devastatingly punny headline. I had a principal this happened to. He never recovered.

I am SO happy to be able to share the wonderful cover for DISPATCHES FROM THE AVANT-GARAGE: THE ALTERNATIVE PRESS coming in March from Wayne State UP. The cover has it all—postcards, letterpress, a bison. Beautifully designed, as it happens, by Lindsey Cleworth, who grew up in my/our hometown.

You know how a cat will do something silly and then look around to make sure no one saw it embarrassing itself? I had that moment today when I forgot how to open the bellows of this camera (that one isn't mine).

One student said the lesson on composition seemed more like art class than photography so I said, "Photography is an art form." Then when I further explained that if you're a photographer you're most likely an artist another kid whispered, "that's *dope*."
