This year, for teacher appreciation week, maybe we can have less coffee mugs and candles and instead have more speaking up. Speak up to defend public education…

We'll give AI human rights before we give actual humans human rights
“Can ChatGPT experience joy or suffering? Does Gemini deserve human rights?” our tech columnist asks. “Many A.I. experts I know would say no, not yet, not even close. But I was intrigued.”
Should We Start Taking the Welfare of A.I. Seriously?
As artificial intelligence systems become smarter, one A.I. company is trying to figure out what to do if they become conscious.

I’m seeing an uptick in “transitioning teacher” content in ways I haven’t seen since 2021. So here are some friendly reminders that…

1.) This is an absolutely terrible job market and many companies, including edtech, have suffered from mass layoffs since October 2022.

I’ve never pushed back against a parent who doesn’t want their kid to discuss a book. Ghosts are a problem? Say no more. Language too intense? There’s always something else in the book room.

You only become a problem when you fight to make decisions for *other* people’s kids.

A racist against the Civil Rights Act of 1957 did the longest filibuster. That same senator voted against the Civil Rights Act and Voting Act. So, yes, this filibuster is historic. No matter your feelings about Booker, you must applaud his passion and dedication to democracy.

A few years ago I visited the National Museum of African American History & Culture with my grandparents. When we stepped out of the building my grandmother kept repeating the words “I lived it. I lived it. I lived it.”

She’s still here. That history is still in her bones. You can never erase that.

Teaching has always been difficult—the last five years nearly impossible. And also I KNOW there are lots of problems in education. But if you are some sort of progressive who is amplifying this rhetoric, you are helping fascists destroy public education

One thing non-disabled people can do to make things easier for disabled people: pause and manage YOUR anxiety about our health instead of spewing it on us. I know it's distressing to hear that someone isn't getting "better" or is in pain. But we don't need to end up comforting *you*
