One of the hallmarks of liberal democracy is the peaceful transfer of power.

That relies on both elite consensus around conceding defeat and losers' consent among the masses.

Danielle Smith's behaviour this week has raised genuine concern on these fronts. +

If authentic, this is a ministerial directive demonstrating that Lagrange herself directed the "procurement" of chartered (privately run, publicly funded, for private profit, surgical centres)

As a proud Canadian-owned and operated company, we want to do our part to support Canadians. As a family we have decided to absorb all immediate increases in our costs due to the Trump-tariffs for the rest of the year to maintain our prices. We will continue to reinforce our Canadian-first policies.

"Evidence from jurisdictions with involuntary treatment policies shows that compulsory treatment does not reduce drug-related harms, improve long-term health outcomes, or prevent overdose deaths." That probably isn't what Alberta cares about, but it's an important point.

A judicial-led public inquiry actually has an Act governing how it must be run. It has the ability to compel witness testimony, and there's a right to legal counsel. Its findings are public. Its parameters are publicly disclosed.

30 minute statement and press conference. And Smith and LaGrange never responded to allegations about political interference into surgical contracts. Just kept saying that AHS is responsible for all contracts and is stonewalling their reforms.

Alberta government is insisting that we have to trust it to investigate itself. That's the long and short of it here.

CP's @reportrix.bsky.social had the correct question on that, and Premier Smith shut it down. They'll investigate themselves, we have to trust them, and it'll take 4 to 6mo.
