Behind the Scenes: Dr. Mark Shlomchik and Dr. Sebastien Gingras of @pitt-immunology.bsky.social discuss data that led to the discovery that divergent signaling domains in TLR7 and TLR9 control their opposing effects on lupus.

Mark Shlomchik and and his team have solved a 20-year #lupus mystery! In a new @jci.org paper, they show that TLR7 & TLR9 receptors signal differently, overturning textbook assumptions & explaining their opposite effects on #autoimmune disease. lnkd.in/extqYBYR

I genuinely don't like it when a reference elides the full list of authors, as happened here on the header page of the pdf version, but I guess I made the cut. 😂

Congrats, Claire, on figuring out this quite complicated story that has puzzled us for many many years!

As an undergrad, one of my first lab experiences was doing 33P-labelled DNA sequencing, on an extremely tall and fragile polyacrylamide gel, which then had to be dried onto Whatman paper, imaged on a phosphoimager, and manually read.

Anyway I just submitted samples for sequencing at $3 a pop.

I did not click on the link in the email about the mandatory security training, I navigated to it through the campus website.

I think this should give me an automatic pass and exempt me from the 20 minute training video.
