My latest in @spectrumculture.bsky.social is on the new album from Dark Thoughts, who are very much worth checking out if you like your songs fast, snotty and tuneful: spectrumculture.com/2025/11/25/d...
Dark Thoughts: Highway to the End - Spectrum Culture
A sneaky evolution of an album, the kind of record that seems like part of a holding pattern until you start to realize the tweaks and variations that make it just ever so different from what came bef...

Also in @spectrumculture.bsky.social, I wrote about the debut (and presumably only) album from Snocaps, which retains the scrappiness of early Waxahatchee/Swearin'/P.S. Eliot while sounding more mature: spectrumculture.com/2025/11/17/s...
Snocaps: Snocaps - Spectrum Culture
From the outset, the quartet presented this as something with lower stakes, a return to a simpler, more spontaneous way of making music after years of scaling upward.

This week at @spectrumculture.bsky.social, I took a look back at Whipping Boy's Heartworm, a personal favorite and one of the great Irish rock albums that, sadly, never quite made it outside of Ireland: spectrumculture.com/2025/11/19/r...
Rediscover: Whipping Boy: Heartworm - Spectrum Culture
Though more celebrated in their home country of Ireland, in America, Whipping Boy’s Heartworm is a forgotten rarity of quality ‘90s Irish rock worth listening to.

Everything great about the Stone Roses was mostly because of the best rhythm section in rock history, which is now half-gone. RIP Mani 🍋: youtu.be/Gl7Knk9Szmc?...

I've never seen Vice, but from my experience, Adam McKay has never made a movie worth watching that didn't also include Will Ferrell doing something sublimely stupid.
If you want to understand Cheney's legacy, maybe the last place you should look is Adam McKay's VICE - the worst Best Picture nominee this century. In the days ahead, there will be funnier obits with more history and moral clarity than McKay - an idiot's idea of a smart man - could ever muster.

Richard Ashcroft has a new album out. It's not very good, and the singles are some of the worst songs he's ever released. My latest for @spectrumculture.bsky.social: spectrumculture.com/2025/10/21/r...
Richard Ashcroft: Lovin’ You - Spectrum Culture
Lovin’ You is less of a grand statement than it is the work of someone throwing whatever they can at the wall in the hopes that it will take a recognizable shape.

Among many dumb things, this follows the tradition of tech bros "inventing" shit that exists already. Dude's describing a fucking press release.

I also wrote about the Buckingham Nicks reissue for @spectrumculture.bsky.social. Now THAT'S a reissue that's well worth your time (provided you don't own an original copy that's going for four figures on Discogs): spectrumculture.com/2025/10/06/b...
Buckingham Nicks: Buckingham Nicks - Spectrum Culture
While a little raw at points, Buckingham Nicks is more than just a curiosity, even as it serves as the prelude to something bigger.

In @spectrumculture.bsky.social, I wrote about the fortuitously timed reissue of the Oasis album that everyone in America owned. It was fun to revisit, but the reissue doesn't do enough to justify its price tag: spectrumculture.com/2025/10/13/o...
Oasis: (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? (30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) - Spectrum Culture

In @spectrumculture.bsky.social, I delved into Jens Lekman's latest crazy-ambitious project, which sadly didn't click with me as much as I hoped it would. Maybe the companion novel will? spectrumculture.com/2025/09/15/j...
Jens Lekman: Songs for Other People’s Weddings - Spectrum Culture
An elaborate concept album takes big tonal swings, which results in some hits and misses.

For @spectrumculture.bsky.social, I wrote about my favorite band's first album, an album that took its time unfolding for me but is nevertheless rewarding: spectrumculture.com/2025/08/21/d...
Discography: R.E.M.: Murmur - Spectrum Culture
Few debuts feel as complete and fully formed as Murmur; that it was merely the jumping off point for R.E.M. is all the more incredible.

For @spectrumculture.bsky.social, I wrote about the latest Nick Drake archival release and how it asks us to reconsider the narrative of Drake as a Tortured Artist: spectrumculture.com/2025/08/03/n...
Nick Drake: The Making of Five Leaves Left - Spectrum Culture
It was the beginning of Drake’s journey rather than its unfortunate end, an experience this reissue aims to recreate for modern listeners.

Holy Hell! The Sunset Tree Turns 20 - Spectrum Culture
This is a monumental album that deftly displays the scope of Darnielle’s literary abilities and ambitions, and it remains essential listening.
