A Gold Dust Day Gecko on the side of my friends house on the Big Island of Hawaii. Native to Madagascar and like all eight species, geckos in Hawaii are non-native.

Every year I travel the county roads around here looking for the best sunflower fields. We’re not quite there yet for this year so here’s one from a previous year.

While they nest in close proximity, each female is responsible for building her own nest, provisioning it with pollen and nectar, and laying her own eggs, without cooperative brood care or division of labor among individuals.
This means that many individual female bees will build their independent nests close to each other in suitable soil, often in the same patch of ground.
The month of May brings colonies of Chimney Bees ( Diadasia bituberculata ) to my favorite trail. While it seems risky to be down among them like this, I’ve never been stung. They live in nesting aggregations.
Eight days later, on May 18th, the iconic eruption that blew out the top and north side of the mountain took place.
On May 10, 1980 I drove around the barriers for the red zone to get to a ridge on the west side that I knew had a clear view to Mt. St. Helens to see a minor eruption and get this photo.
