Imagine posing for a photographer friend who sells your image to iStock and a year later, you see this is what The Washington Post has done with the image of you walking on a beautiful fall day

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Five years since I originally posted this on the other place. Mad!
The most stressed out I've ever been about Christmas was when I was 16 and I got my first ever job, working at M&S in Dundrum. As soon as I started I kept hearing these myths about the Christmas Eve Waste Sale, where all the food that wasn't sold on the 24th was marked down 90%.

The nonviolent moment was *not* peaceful.

The point was to draw out state violence, and be willing to face batons, water cannons, jail, and worse.

And Martin Luther King still got shot in the head— other civil rights leaders assassinated.

And now, civil rights progress is being rolled back.
retaliating tooth-tooth when bigots bring violence feels good in the moment

strategic non-violent civil disobedience wins in long term👇🏼

certainly do what you need to do in an individual encounter

I’m talking more about how to win in long term & end this madness

One central lesson of 1960s civil rights protests is that activists can “dramatize injustice” through strategic “narrative construction,” essentially creating compelling stories in the media with clear heroes and villains. More in this thread: bsky.app/profile/owas...

A couple of years ago we got sort of exhausted about the similar meals for Christmas Eve, Christmas, in law Christmas etc. so now Xmas Eve we pick a country and tell our kid that is where Santa is stopping for dinner so that is what we are having for dinner too.

Such classic gaslighting it's an instructive moment. The question is not whether generic is better or worse, it's that a list with more expensive brand names is not the same as a list with cheaper generics. Perverting that truth into an attack on those calling it out is Manipulation 101.
Hassett: "On one of the Sunday shows, the anchor criticized the fact Walmart said the Thanksgiving dinner is cheaper by about $10. Then he said, 'Oh yeah, but they substituted generic stuff,' as if having a generic something is a crime for ordinary folks! It shows how out of touch these people are."

Listen, this administration isn’t “making America great.” It’s targeting our neighbors, tearing families apart, and putting lives on the line. Democrats on Oversight are standing up because this fight isn’t about left or right. It’s about right and wrong. Period.

He goes even further, branding Leo “the woke American pope” and suggesting he’s a tool of the Antichrist.
