Now might be a good time to repost this story about what scientists actually know about the complex causes of autism, and what's behind the increasing prevalence.

Autism is on the rise: what’s really behind the increase?
RFK Jr has vowed to find out what’s responsible, but scientists say he is ignoring answers from decades of research.

I often think about this study that shows ducklings swimming in a single-file formation behind their parent conserve energy through wave-riding, where trailing ducklings gain forward push, and wave-passing, where energy transfers efficiently along the line. Get your ducks in a row.

Lots of good albums were released this year.
These are the ones I found most interesting and returned to the most in 2024.

In no particular order (not really, but I don't want to commit that much).

You've probaly seen various headlines this year about bird flu and the potential for a new pandemic.

So I've written a new substack as a simple explainer on what a flu pandemic actually is, why bird flu and what's been going on over the last 3 years.

How close is a new bird flu (H5N1) pandemic?
Probably not around the corner but getting uncomfortably closer.

The "Ashcroft/Mermin Project"
I will try to (likely very slowly) make one or more visualization per chapter of "Solid State Physics" by Ashcroft and Mermin, with the hope that they will be useful to people teaching/learning solid state Physics.

Entropy is one of those formulas that many of us learn, swallow whole, and even use regularly without really understanding.

(E.g., where does that “log” come from? Are there other possible formulas?)

Yet there's an intuitive & almost inevitable way to arrive at this expression.

Hey #CompChem. Do you know of any computational studies involving PFAS interaction with sensors (for detection)?
