Bill Fay RIP. Absolutely crushing news. The loveliest person I ever interviewed. Gracious, wise and humble. I wanted to write a book about him. He declined, believing the commitment involved would take him away from his great joy in life, composing songs. Fly on Bill. Those songs will last forever.

My favourite single by Salford’s finest. Well, apart from “Bus Stop” anyway. Goosebump-inducing harmonies into a major/minor chord change. Recorded on hearing Carole King’s demo of Goffin & Titelman’s composition.

Great songwriting from #JohnCarter & #KenLewis and a harmony-laden sound that recalls the Zombies, the Byrds & the Beach Boys. #Piccadilly

Saw them at Milton Keynes, travelled down from Manchester on a coach. Magnapop, Belly and Blur supported. The coach home wasn’t until the next day so we just roughed it. It was warm, it was the summer, R.E.M. were touring for the first time since 1989. Life was good! Great memories!

While the A-side to this #Liverpool trio’s sole 45 is a Cavern-filling rocker, side B is the more interesting cut. A thread runs from it to the La’s and beyond. #OTD

With this #ManfredMann cover, it feels like Rivers invents power pop — the Nick Lowe/Elvis Costello version of it. The flip is Beach Boys on scooters. #Columbia #OTD

Neil Young - On The Beach (1974)

For me it’s one of his best albums. It still puzzles me that it was hard to get hold of for so long, it stopped being pressed on vinyl in the 80s and wasn’t released on CD until 2003!

Glorious, five-star, organ-fuelled mid-60s beat from this Manchester act adopted by the Netherlands. While touring there in ‘64, they won a talent contest leading to a deal with #CNR. Released in 4 different sleeves.

Spinning some Christmas present vinyl 🎶

This is dreamy psychedelic 60s type stuff with luscious vocal harmonies, and definite hints of Stereolab. It’ll be on my end of year list!

This psych-pop gem was Bernie Schwartz’s only single under this pseudonym. Produced by the #EverlyBrothers — and rumoured to be co-written by Phil — it reached most people’s ears via the 2005 compilation, My Mind Goes High.
