Not paying out SNAP is a choice, not an inevitable consequence of the shutdown.

Lawmakers could, by the end of today, pause the expiration of existing licenses for businesses that take EBT, move money from non-essential functions and maintain existing beneficiaries for the duration of the shutdown.
No one hand writes paper checks to SNAP recipients in normal times. The funds are disbursed automatically. The majority of infrastructure goes to means testing current recipients or processing applicants. The money clearly exists; this is a choice made independent of the shutdown to squeeze voters.
We have money for a $20b bailout of Argentina, but the acting director of SNAP has just announced that SNAP benefits will be cut off on November 1.

Just as a heads up, the ANNUAL budget allocation for SNAP is $100b.

I got political spam from the agency.

This raises so many issues.

How can I tell it from spam fraud

How can I opt out

How can I take action without losing out on real practical info

Will I be punished for doing so

How is this legal

What are you going to do

Five years ago, I went off my diet and I’ve been putting on a little weight ever since. I’m gonna extend my current eating habits for the next 10 years and I’m glad to hear that I won’t gain any weight.
If you think about it, it’s a great way to bring down prices
Senate just adopted a current policy baseline. This means they’re treating most of their tax cuts, which were slated to end this year, as “free” because people got used to having them before
Congrats, every time you renew your Netflix or buy another Starbucks coffee or lease a new car, it’s now free

I am no expert but I bet even with incentives removed and punitive tax imposed, renewables will outcompete long term. Horrible idea in this BS Bill but we shall overcome. Irreversible harm to climate and much economic pain meantime. Self inflicted wounds will need healing.
