This isn’t health promotion: This is Abu Dhabi. #IUHPE2025 is bad for people and the planet.
IUHPE worked hard to build a wall of excuses and falsehoods to justify their presence in the UAE. A disgrace to health promotion.
The UAE is a dictatorship with one of the worst human rights records on earth. It has the seventh highest rate of modern-day slavery. For women and LGBT people, the situation is dire.

But in Western media, you’re more likely to hear about their chocolate.

“Dubai Chocolate” is Regime Propaganda
The viral pistachio-filled candy bar is everywhere—but there’s nothing sweet about the United Arab Emirates and its human rights record.

Earlier this week an Emirati court upheld an abusive 15-year sentence against prominent Emirati human rights defender Ahmed Mansoor.

The UAE continues to target a man who courageously stood up to his abusive govt even when very few would dare.

The proud host of #IUHPE2025. Welcome to Abu Dhabi…
Ahmed Mansoor was arrested 8 years ago. He was then sentenced to 10 years in prison for his human rights activism. Last year, he was given an additional 15-year sentence. A few days ago, this ruling was confirmed. Be his voice. #FreeAhmed #UnitedArabEmirates #UAE

A mass trial in the UAE last year saw 53 human rights defenders & political dissidents sentenced to long prison terms. It was unfair & cruel.

Yesterday, all appeals were rejected.

The only thing these folks did was peacefully exercise their human rights.

An unfair mass trial in the #UAE highlights the total mockery of the country’s justice system when it comes to political dissent. Read @astroehlein in @hrw’s Daily Brief:

It’s hard to understand what IUHPE Executive was thinking when they partnered with this monstrous state. There is not health without human rights #IUHPE2025
The evidence overwhelmingly states that exposure to the global economy does not bring forward social and political change. It's the opposite. It empowers these states. Human rights in Abu Dhabi are worse now than in 2008. And they use the club for their political aims.

I am thankful for the long Microsoft / UAE ad that keeps popping up on YouTube, because it reminds me that the UAE exists and that I should never go there... human rights being trod under the most affable and well-shod heels of course

The decision by EL to hold the F4 in Abu Dhabi is a tragic one. This is neither an act of openness nor a promotion of the sport. It is pure bribery, relocating the F4 to a country that shows no respect for human rights. Shame on you. #euroleague

The host nation for #IUHPE2025. Where is torture advocated in the Ottawa Charter?
"📢 Human Rights Day reminds us of freedom, equality, and justice.

Yet in the UAE, arbitrary imprisonment, torture, and silencing dissent persist. Activists, journalists, and opposition voices remain targeted...

The world must act to end these violations."
