I do not like that universities feel the need to “brand” themselves. Find your “identity” as a department, they say. Revise your “mission.” I believe our mission is advancing knowledge in all areas. That hasn’t changed in a thousand years.

Someone recently described me as “direct” (derogatory). At first I panicked - once a woman is seen as “difficult,” you can hear doors slamming everywhere. And then I remembered how hard I’ve worked to overcome being a people-pleaser, and the great things that came from it. So I’m good for now. 🤞🏼
