Which is something that these disrupter Silicon Valley people never seem to consider.

You can fuck up reforming a military force horribly. You can add new technology, doctrine, and equipment and if you systematically do it wrong you’ll get the dogshit kicked out of you.

The French military in 1940 is the worst possible example of this. They did adapt. They built a conventional military force based on lessons of WWI. They incorporated new technologies. They built new doctrines.

They just learned all the wrong lessons and as a result they fucking sucked.
That’s not what happened in 1940 lol, the French army did not sit behind the maginot line

My assessment of the Trump national security strategy: "it sees the United States’ adversaries as partners in that war, but it does not see how much U.S. power relies on the voluntary assistance of other countries."
The Only War the White House Is Ready for Is Culture War
The new U.S. National Security Strategy is a moral and strategic disaster.

Historian here OTD a day that will live in infamy we need to point out that the reconstruction of Japan and Germany proved to be successful after WWII but the Reconstruction of the misbegotten Confederacy was brutally overthrown. We still live with the legacy of that history in the United States.

There is no gizmo that an offset the disadvantage of not having 1.5m 155mm shells when you needed to have 1,500,000 155mm shells.

However many shells you think you have, I can tell you that if your country gets into a real large-scale 'big boy' war, the exact number of shells you have is "not enough."

During WWI, then minister-of-munitions David Lloyd George looked at the BEF's estimates for machine guns (4 per battalion) and quipped, "square it, multiply that result by 2, and when you are in sight of that, double it again for good luck."

Which turned out to be the real final number.
there is also an awful lot of advantage if you have 3m 155m shells when you only needed 1.5m

this is a fundamental principle of self-governance, in the end. the constitution is not in heaven. the constitution is not hidden away in some vault somewhere and tended to by nine priests in black robes. the constitution is in all of us, or it is nowhere.
It's largely lost today because we've allowed constitutional law to become the exclusive preserve of lawyers, but the original idea of written constitutionalism was partly one of public education, publicity, & (proto-)democracy—people should be able to read & come to know the law which binds them
The evidence is the text. All you have to do is read the Constitution.

As someone who actually studied ancient Rome, I just want to point out that M*sk here is looking at a Bernini sculpture from the 17th century. Not ancient Roman.

people died for birthright citizenship. i get that it’s more fun to be a pundit when your team has the white house and you get to brag to friends about visiting the oval office; but what i’m wondering is if maybe that’s actually not a good reason to throw away something we fought a civil war to win?
