A ridiculous coda to this story: A USTA source tells me that Trump wanted to hand out the trophy to the winner of the US Open men's final but the organizers said no and compromised by displaying the trophy on the balcony of the Rolex suite where he was sitting.

as far as I understand, the idea of the ATP is to create a counterweight to the slams. The 9masters tour didn't live up to that, i.e. all that counts for top 5 players & audience are slam titles. So the way to go about this is to create tournaments (3, 4 or 5) that can do what AO did in the eighties
