All the young people I know hate it. They use it but reluctantly. But mostly because they can see right through it - and know very well this is all about stockholders and dividends and making money, not helping anything. #AI
I was worried my kids would rely on AI as a shortcut but they hate it. They use "AI" to mean stupid or cheap ("aimbot" means good). I tried to say AI is helpful for some things and my daughter said "yeah, for making you stupid." This is how they talked about Drake after "Not Like Us" came out

Such a great point.
Imagine if they just subsidized newspapers and magazines the way they’re subsidizing this slop
"All of this falls apart if humans don't adopt the tech. This is why you've seen Meta cram its lame chatbots into WhatsApp and Instagram. This is why Notepad and Paint now have useless Copilot buttons on Windows. This is why Google Gemini wants to "help you" read and reply to your emails."

Excellent thread on why, if you hate tech things, you have good reasons no matter what anyone says. We've been bullied from day one.
But the psychologically invasive/manipulative effects of a TV ad pale in comparison to the impact of an algorithmically tailored assault on the specific insecurities of an alienated 15 year old looking at a screen alone in their bedroom. I don't know what the solution is, but this is bad.

it is amazing how so much tech gets unremittingly worse year on year at whatever you once used it for and less pleasant to use and more bound up with creepy politics as well as personal and environmental harms and yet also still less productive of actual goods and these are somehow great visionaries

I love @thebeaverton.com so much and I am not surprised in the slightest that "the AI bot which wrote this story would quote us". Well done everyone there!!!

I don't understand the deal with Alberta that @mark-carney.bsky.social has created. And I still trust him. Maybe being from there means something different. One thing for sure, I have lost all hope of learning anything about it from our media opinion writers.

People in Toronto want to live in a big city but not as a real big city I guess.
Isabella St. A perfectly good apt bldn empty, people displaced & being demolished all because so much of Toronto is off limits & forced here. Aka house neighbourhoods. Such a shame. Such waste. And the shame of every elected official here. Shame of Ford for not pushing reforms. All the same.
