Twice a month School of Visual Storytelling hosts a FREAKY FRIDAY DRAW-ALONG. I co-hosted with Lee White recently and the subject was "Weird Science".

Super fun, and definitely the only way I'd ever draw a dancing waterbear with top hat and cane!

Well-loved stuffies, holders of childhood truths, featured in new book
Children’s book author and illustrator Sophie Blackall asked readers for photos of their stuffed animals. She got hundreds, most with moving backstories.

Who here knows how to market a picture book? What's worked for you? What has failed? What did you just really love doing and what will you never to again? Is there a hashtag I can use to share our collective wisdom with the community?

I love seeing the #picturebook art process! Looking forward to this book release! ❤️
Countdown to pub of THE DOG WHO SAVED THE BEES words by @stephaniegibeault.bsky.social art by me avail Aug 1

Every book starts off in this storyboard format. This allows me to see the book’s visual pacing and assign a keyword to each spread to track its emotional pacing as well.

Thanks @joshfunkbooks.bsky.social ❤️
How can you help your favorite author without buying their book?

Here are a handful of ideas of things you can do before their book releases:

1. Request that your local library purchase a copy. This can be done in person or often in an online form.

Because there are so few words to work with in a children's picture book, each word has to be chosen carefully to make the biggest impact. Being aware of connotation can help a picture book author communicate more clearly and with fewer words.

The Power of Connotation in Picture Books | Jane Friedman
When your manuscript is 500 words or less, a carefully-chosen word can carry both emotional weight and contextual clarity.
