It‘s frankly astonishing to me how everyone just walks around pretending that their lives will all just go on in a predictable manner, that the entire planet is not being willfully steered toward certain disaster. It‘s fascinating & horrifying; at once completely understandable & shockingly evil.

Was about to take a deep dive this morning into processes for protecting democracy but…the truth is, I’m not sure democracy will help. People will keep voting for the comfortable option, the party that tells them what they want to hear, until collapse is undeniable and recovery impossible.

And the folks who are actually writing full-time generally only got there after years of day jobs, family support, or both.
The point of sharing this is not to demoralize anyone, but to let emerging writers know they're not failing if they can't make a living off writing alone. Almost no one can.

almost every novelist you read who's not from the airport fiction or bestseller sections is working a full on day job, including multi-award winners and absolute legends, or they have a spouse or trust that supports them. virtually across the board. just normalize in your mind that's how it works.
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

Seeing how much of the right-wing on Twitter is just bot farms, kinda lays bare how much hate and hatred is a project that needs to be constantly maintained, a fire that needs to be fed all the time lest it go out for a moment, so much time, effort, and resources to keep people angry and hateful.

I hold extremist views such as: if it is both compassionate and demonstrably less expensive to provide housing for the unhoused (and it is), we should do it, unquestionably. And if we do not, we should at least stop pretending we‘re good people.

TBH, I have stopped looking at the Liberals and Conservatives as opposing parties and now see them more as a good cop/bad cop routine.

I really enjoy how HRM pretends that all the problems we face are somehow unique to our community and not, in fact, raging across the western world. This is something WE have to sort out uniquely, on our own.

She is in an alleyway, where a dozen people are huddled around a row of bulletin boards.
They are reading the job ads on the board, while examining the stitching on a pair of chinos draped over it.
This is Shein's supply chain. The factories are contracted to make clothes on order - some small, some big. If the chinos are a hit, orders will ramp up and so must production. Factories then hire temporary workers to meet the demand their permanent staff cannot fulfil.
The migrant worker from Jiangxi is looking for a short-term contract - and the chinos are an option.
"We earn so little. The cost of living is now so high," she says, adding that she hopes to make enough to send back to her two children who are living with their grandparents.
"We get paid per piece," she explains. "It depends how difficult the item is.
