Idaho says it has 1,235 wolves as of May 2024- a drop from last year. But the state also changed its counting method, raising concerns. With a goal of slashing the population to 500, shifting estimates may be more about politics than science.

Rep. Gosar (R-AZ) & 10 anti-wolf members of Congress have introduced a bill to remove the Mexican gray wolf from the ESA. Not because the species has recovered. Not because the science supports delisting. Simply because the livestock lobby can’t handle coexisting with carnivores on public lands.
286 Wolves, One Unhinged Congressman—and a Government Ready to Finish the Job
A new bill from Rep. Paul Gosar aims to gut Mexican gray wolf protections—not because recovery is complete, but to appease the livestock industry’s war on native wildlife.

Less livestock ➡️ more trees.
Across the entire planet, from Ireland to Costa Rica, livestock farming has been an utter catastrophe for forests and other natural habitats, replacing unimaginably species-rich ecosystems with sterile cattle or sheep pastures.

And this is how extinctions too often happen, if we let them. Incrementally, cumulatively via isolated ‘development’ projects which on their own seem innocuous. Strategic landscape environmental assessment is essential: far better than project-specific EIAs.
