Just a progressive scientist who actually cares more about people than scoring points. What's so wrong with being compassionate and caring? It's a lie that we have to trample our neighbors in order to succeed.

Finally, FFS! This was beautiful.

It's really vile to be told, "We don't want to abandon trans kids to these sick fucks, but they're dragging us down and democracy is more important."

This is a pro-trans message, but really it's a pro-human message.

Fuck ups in ‘the groups’: We have to sacrifice trans people

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

Trump on Ukraine: "They'd like to have Tomahawks. We talked about that. We'll see. I might have to speak to Russia, to be honest with you, about Tomahawks. Do they want to have Tomahawks going in their direction? I don't think so."

The unstated purpose of AI is to allow capital to acquire skill while taking away the ability of those with skills to acquire capital.

“The investment firm Narya Capital—which Vance launched in 2020 with backing from Peter Thiel—was a vehicle for [AcreTrader] investments & a key backer in early funding rounds of the farmland startup…Vance is still an investor in the firm.” — Civil Eats

I think it's more likely a deregulation issue.

Certain highly profitable business practices have been, in their view, needlessly restricted, stifling their ability to maximize profits, and requiring complicated workarounds.

Their solution is to recreate the conditions for slavery.

For the most part, yes, but I suspect this is not an entirely unrealistic prediction.

So she took humor meant to help process horror, and used it as fuel for even more horror.

Now that's classy.

I don't know if it's necessarily an admission, but it's highly suggestive.

Even worse is when you respond with, "if that's true, bring a case against our guy, if he's guilty he should be held accountable," and they flip out like, "don't try to be clever, i'm not falling for your tricks."

Sigh.

So often we see this editorializing of the true nature of what they're critiquing, replacing the noble with the trivial so they can trash this stand-in rather than truly engaging.

It's almost like they feel the need to shrink everything else around them. I wonder why that could be...

a key thing about vought — and all of these guys — is that they have a totally top down and hierarchical vision of the world. they believe that the cultural changes they hate can be turned off by destroying the federal government because they can’t imagine that they emerged bottom-up in society

What he’s railing against is a profound shift in culture, status… He’s obsessed with the idea that America is controlled by a leftist “ruling elite” - but “elite” isn’t defined socio-economically or by political power, it means something like: Getting to define “real America” and who gets to belong.

It'll just take some time for the full effects of the plan to manifest. Once the public school kids are all hungry, sick, and terrified, the voucher kids will finally be able shine.

Ah, that was the clarifying point I was looking for, thanks. I didn't realize "militant atheism" entailed all that, this is my first time seeing the term.
filipvanevski.bsky.social
What movement? Is there really a thing called "militant atheism" where the members believe a certain thing? I could call them "old men with accents" and that might be true but it doesn't really have anything to do with them being bad-faith actors.
filipvanevski.bsky.social
It's always maddening to hear somebody tear into a lengthy, "but they did it to me first!" when being asked if there is anything wrong with what they are doing.

If they only tried they'd realize it's so much easier just being honest.

Retributive justice isn't how our legal system is supposed to work. It is a corruption of the rule of law. It is fascism. youtu.be/j8v9fP5YC6A
filipvanevski.bsky.social
Gotcha. What did them being atheists have to do with it? I looked through the earlier posts and couldn't find what claim you were responding to. Is "militant atheism" some specific practice that leads to this crappy behavior, or just noting nothing about atheism protects you from being stupid?
filipvanevski.bsky.social
Maybe you can help me understand the points you're trying to make here. Are you refuting some claim that atheists can't do stupid shit? Also, what is the "foundation for anti-trans bigotry"? Are you saying that everybody who is anti-trans became that way because of something some dudes said?

The Roberts court cannot be understood outside the context of the decades old far-right project to resuscitate the most successful business strategy in history: convince society that there are different groups of people, with some inherently better than others.

I went to high school with John. He’s one of those rare people who make the world better simply by refusing to give up on it, or on others. His story feels especially worth remembering today. #NationalComingOutDay
Screenshot of a Facebook post by John Hulsey. He writes about the 37th anniversary of being outed by the Marine Corps, when the Naval Investigative Service began investigating him for treason, espionage, and selling secrets—charges that proved false. The only truth, he says, was that he was gay. He describes the ordeal as a story of Marines, homosexuality, jealous lovers, top secret clearances, suicidal thoughts, friendship, a courtroom trial, and ongoing redemption. He notes the irony that the investigation began on October 11, 1988—the same date as the first National Coming Out Day—and ends by reflecting that perhaps the universe chose that date for a reason. The post closes with the hashtag #NationalComingOutDay and a rainbow emoji. Three photos of a young man in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In the top left, he smiles outdoors wearing a black sweatshirt. In the top right, he’s in camouflage military uniform, turning toward the camera and smiling. The bottom photo shows him in full military uniform, standing in the snow outside a green tent, holding a red Marine Corps flag.

Mamdani talking lucidly and passionately about trans rights and history in a video that should frankly shame every politician who has hemmed and hawed and triangulated and said, "Well, but sports..." It's not that hard to tell the truth and stand for what's right. www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEvV...

Yeah, I'm hearing Christian Nationalists say stuff like, "See, this societal collapse is because we strayed from God! We need to make butt sex illegal again!"

Why don't we give secular society a real go?

These self-professed Christians in office are behaving worse than toddlers. Disqualifying.
