suspect it is possible for models to be much, much smaller than they are. Current models are so big because 1. They partially memorize the internet and 2. it seems to help with optimization. Any other arguments that they must be so big?

This is pretty fascinating. People using the coding LLMs thought they were building faster with them, but they were actually slower. I’m guessing that people who are excited by these tools would be the most susceptible to this.

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers.

The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.
