This weight presses upon me every day. I am flooded with stories. There are so many I cannot remember them all; cannot keep straight who was gassed, beaten, abducted, or shot. I write to leave a record, to stare at the track of the tornado which tears through our city. I write to leave […]

National landlord company has pissed me off enough to go talk to some nice local organized folks that like to help tenants.

Tired of some Texas company shoving a lot of bad systems and policies down on underpaid local management staff many states away. The staff and tenants here deserve better.

How poor leadership slows down game development
How poor leadership slows down game development
No tool—AI or otherwise—can speed up game development if leaders don't rise to the occasion.

Always notable to remember Cheney wouldn’t have been VP had the winner of the 2000 election made it to the White House. Instead the Supreme Court decided W Bush “won” after Roger Stone orchestrated the Brooks Brothers Riots in Florida that delayed recounts, aka a mini Jan 6, 2021.

Yep.
That and the fact that the US political and media apparatus made sure that neither Bush nor Cheney paid any price for what they did after their rule ended. just back to the politics of "decency" and politeness. No justice, no accounting.
Between Gitmo, the Department of "Homeland Security," the Hague Invasion Act, extraordinary rendition, torture gulags, No Child Left Behind, the Patriot Act, and the Great Recession, Bush and Cheney did more to enable the rise of Trump and fascism in the US than almost anyone in the 21st century.

When you email issues to Obsidian Entertainment (the video game company) their AI support hallucinates and tells you to email Obsidian (the note-taking company) instead.

If the reward function is to reduce the number of touches in a support ticket, this is one way to do it.

New blog post, on the role of attrition in software incidents, and how we don't talk about that in incident write-ups:

You’ll never see attrition referenced in an RCA
In the wake of the recent AWS us-east-1 outage, I saw speculation online about how the departure of experienced engineers played a role in the outage. The most notable one was from the acerbic clou…

They hanged the people who got us the 8-hour workday.
If people actually understood how willing our government is to go to war with its own people simply for demanding equal rights, I think a lot more of us would be ready for war.

Amazon is helping fund a $300 million build of a ballroom for the White House.

Independent bookstores are donating to food banks and organizations that help with food insecurity.

They are not the same.

Always interesting seeing the impacts of different outages. AWS outages tend to get a bit more press and social chatter while tending to not impact much in my current professional life, and the outages that do impact things at work tend to be the quieter ones for others.

I legitimately didn't know they were competing with Steam and it's crazy to me that they burnt so much money on what sounds like something with very little (or wildly misguided) market research.

Feeling the frustration from seeing possible workflow improvements for the team, but there’s legitimately no time to work on those improvements currently

Clear communication and spreading troubleshooting steps will have to patch over the rough bumps for now. Focused helpdesk rooms are nice for this

I don’t talk about it much because the situation doesn’t really change but it’s still insane to me what an enormous amount of really talented game developers are out of work. just whole studios worth of incredible people, often people who worked on beloved games, unemployed.

Worn out after a good resort trip, enjoyed a weekend away from home.

The No Kings protests were great to see, including the one in the small town we stayed at. Took time Saturday to drive around the area, and went to go toot the horn in support.

We are marks and chumps honestly. Little girls and grandmothers were in the streets of Cairo for weeks over less than this, and at greater peril to their own safety.
Thinking about how much of their violence has been normalized already, how scenes that caused shockwaves 6 weeks ago are now part of the rhythm of daily life. Watched a TikTok from a daughter who has to do her parents' laundry & get their groceries because they're in hiding. This is just it now
