This week in Florence, Italy brought me face-to-face with some of the greatest artistic geniuses of western civilization. Creativity so profound that it birthed the Renaissance - a fusion of the human and divine in classical forms.

This morning we enjoyed the vast, silent majesty of the Sahara desert in Morocco. #morocco #desert #photography #fotografia #travel #documentary #landscape #travelphotography
Kenyan Somali women erect a shelter called an “aqal” in northwest Kenya. These portable shelters are dome shaped and covered with thick grass mats and carried on the backs of camels when disassembled.

Walking down a narrow chasm to the Treasury of Petra, one walks in the footsteps of the ancients.

“All at once the desert was everywhere, and I was overcome with a feeling of relief. Sand, rocks, hills — the whole landscape was tinted the same shade of orange as the sky.” — Jasmin Darznik

I used to take photos for Doctors Without Borders, which took me to some far-flung places. In this case the war troubled region of (now) South Sudan. This is a Dinka boy in front of a crashed food transport plane.

Almost got a traffic ticket there riding a rented motorbike. Our mutual language incomprehension resulted in just a warning from the very nice traffic cop.
It was 1988 when I made this photo of a Somali man and his daughter filling water skins at a mountain stream in northern Somalia. This was right before the civil war when I could still travel safely. Pastoral traditions continue even now.

Ma’in Hot Springs in the hills above the Dead Sea. Once the therapeutic retreat for Herod the Great to bathe his skin sores, it’s now a popular waterfalls and thermal springs site for Jordanian visitors.

A Samburu guide on our walking safari in the Mathews Range mountains in northern Kenya. His antique era rifle still seemed serviceable.

When I lived in Jordan I followed the path of the Arab Revolt in the Great War. Instrumental to the ouster of the Ottoman authorities was T.E. Lawrence. This castle in Azrak was one of the bases from which attacks were launched.

You meet the nicest people in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. In this case, a Coptic Cleric from Egypt deep in the cavernous recesses of the church.

In Kenya you meet the most interesting people. Here, I photographed Lupita Nyong’o on a fashion shoot in Tsavo West National Park before she attained Hollywood glory some years later.

I could spend years on the streets of Cairo trying to capture the ever shifting spirit of this loud, chaotic, dynamic city. If it doesn’t move, then it’s ancient history!

Close encounter of the feline kind. While staying in a cottage in the Tsavo West national park a pride of lions wandered outside hunting buffalo. Here we came face to face to each other’s surprise!

Lots of nostalgia for me. I used to live on 2d and Bell.
Happy Thanksgiving for those who celebrate! Since food is the center piece of this holiday (and life), I present to you Senegal’s national dish of fish and rice (ceeb-u-jeen). Magnifique!
