“Nobody voted for Rogernomics 41 years ago — the free market failed our people in the 1980s and it is failing us today. The legacy of Roger Douglas must be torn down root and branch. It is time to end the era of neoliberalism once and for all.”

Roger Douglas is once again making headlines at age 87. The former Finance Minister is using the pretext of the economic crisis to call for Nicola Willis to resign and for the Coalition to implement even harsher austerity measures.

Read my piece about it:

In the Tāmaki Makaurau byelection, TPM candidate Kaipara was able to retain 60% of the votes her predecessor received in 2023. Labour's Henare was only able to retain 31% of his voters.

Labour will hope that the lack of enthusiasm demonstrated in this byelection is not reflective of a trend.

I’ve got a new piece in the Spinoff this morning. Taking inspiration from Zohran Mamdani: could publicly-owned supermarkets challenge the duopoly and bring down extortionate food prices in Aotearoa?

The agenda of the Coalition can be summarised in one phrase: Divide and Plunder. Their aim is to sow racism and division among working people while redistributing wealth upwards at an alarming rate.

Divide and Plunder: Understanding New Zealand's Right-Wing Turn
Those who thought the Coalition would tear itself apart through division and infighting were mistaken. The government is united in its strategy to divide the public and redistribute wealth upwards.

Everyone on the left can agree that we must change the government. But if Labour wins in 2026 and refuses to transform the system generating extreme inequality, NZ society will continue to fragment.

Good news! NZ union density has been steadily increasing among workers aged 15-44 for the last 9 years, and increased significantly in the year after the Coalition took power in 2023. [1/4]

"Their aim is to use US global superpower status to increase economic prosperity. While from the outside the actions of the White House may look random, we can be sure of this: inducing a sense of chaos is deliberate. Trump wants opponents to be confused."

The Trump Shock
There is a method to Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariff madness. The chaos and confusion is deliberate; the aim is nothing less than the controlled disintegration of the world economy.

In the face of the most right-wing govt we have had in decades, the NZ left must overcome division, disorganisation and defeatism, and develop a strategy to fight back.

Activists inside centre-left parties overseas have attempted to challenge neoliberalism by trying to get socialist leaders elected such as Jeremy Corbyn and Bernie Sanders. Could this happen within NZ Labour?

I interviewed my friend and comrade on Friday. Nadia is a member of Justice for Palestine, and is an organiser for Don't Bank on Apartheid. We discussed the end of the ceasefire, and why we shouldn’t exceptionalise Trump and his role in the genocide.

Cuts to Disability Services Are Part of a Class War
Over the last year, the Coalition has unleashed a series of cuts which have been devastating for the disabled community. These cuts are part of a class war — and it's time to organise and fight back.

It is time that the left took some notes from the neoliberals on how to transform society. If we don't, our economy will only ever move in one direction: ever-higher levels of inequality.

Luxon is selling NZ as “a poster child for stability” amidst a “storm.”

Why is the PM selling us to the highest bidder as this bastion of stability, when at the exact same time his govt is engineering the conditions NZ to rapidly become more unstable?

Is NZ as Stable as Luxon Claims?
By pursuing cuts, selling off assets to multinationals, enabling ACT's attacks on the Treaty and cutting back on climate commitments, Luxon is guaranteeing that NZ will not be stable for long.
