Not really sure what to expect from the COP30 anymore, but boy does part of me with I were on my way back to Belém.
Ready for Belém!

Just arrived in Brazil for COP30, with good news.

The EU has just adopted its NDC for 2035.

66-72% in GHG reduction by 2035 from to 1990.

A milestone on our path to reaching climate neutrality in 🇪🇺 by 2050.

And to keeping the Paris goals within reach.

Tragically, this is 100% true.
Impossible to overstate how exciting field conferences are for academics. We spend 11.95 months a year with people only understanding 5-15% of our jokes and references, but then for three glorious days 😍😍😍

Yes, this question… rankles. Though also, better that they revolt over this, however incoherently? Maybe my expectations for people have fallen so low that even this seems like something better than I would have hoped.
Who did these staff think they were aligning themselves with *before* the Fuentes interview? Their views on Christian Nationalism meld quite well with Fuentes and it’s weird to pretend they don’t know this.

Yes. And, read another way, oh look at that, elites actually do have power and the regime cannot just do whatever it says it is going to do without their collaboration.
So it’s ok everywhere but where they employ workers that they actually care about a little

books should have an anti-acknowledgements section where the author talks shit about all the people who fucked them over while they were trying to write the thing. not bc I personally want to write one but bc I love gossip

There are books written in languages that are not English, French, German, or Spanish that are better than anything you will ever read in English, French, German, or Spanish.

I think this is right and I think it is also true of short books and novellas and things, especially if they feel long.
I don’t think a long book is even primarily about plot, or character, or any of the patterned information on its pages. A long book is practicing over time a way of being in the world. Reading even a very good summary is not the same as giving over some portion of your own life to that practice.

I cannot for the life of me understand why this has not been THE story of the then impending and now ongoing shutdown. honestly wtf
I've been banging this drum for the past four months or so: DOGE and Russ Vought broke the appropriations process. What's the point of going through the arduous process of crafting 12 spending bills, clearing them through committee and getting them through two chambers if Trump does rescissions?
If appropriations bills are not seen as enforceable contracts, why should any Member of Congress vote to fund any part of the federal government under Donald Trump? You're voting to provide money for lawlessness. www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/there-is-n...
