HS English teacher in CA. I love noticing, asking questions, making connections, learning, and sharing.
On Monday we explored the world of metaphor: complex, conceits, rhetorical, cognitive, analogies.

On Wednesday students worked in groups creating extended, or complex metaphors comparing their fears/worries to a scary setting. It was a pre-writing activity for student created scary stories.

As you were talking about dugout touching it made me think of this Barbara Kruger piece.

Why have I never heard anyone talking about how hard it is to see the ball against the batter’s eye at SF with that 7pm sun light glaring off it.

Interesting park factor.

My favorite presentation at #SpringCUE was a 20 min session on #conceptualthinking and #innovationmindset by Saba Ghole from #nuvustudio @cueinc.bsky.social

What a “Friendly” experience watching @kelsbellsncourt.bsky.social help a jam-packed room of teachers figure out how to give timely feedback using @briskteaching.bsky.social and other tools.

Thanks @cueinc.bsky.social

Dear humanities/art teachers,

How do you help students break the idea that 100% is the default grade for turning in something that "meets expectations?"

In my mind, the "very good grade" is somewhere between 88-94%, and getting above 95% requires an exceptional or beyond-expectations creation.

How do most MS & HS ELA teachers handle word choice that is sliding from inappropriate to culturally popular in many settings?

There's a term that I'm seeing more & more in student writing and it's beyond awkward to bring it to the student's attention. I don't even want to put it on an avoid list.

Looking for a fast way to detect AI writing in a high school humanities course? Just look for one word:

I have 175 students in my 5 high school ELA classes this year. (185 is the max)

In my 3 CP 10 ELA and 2 Honors 10 ELA classes, I gave my students the choice of using A.I. to complete part of their research paper on Ethics and a dramatic play. Then I gave them a survey. Here is the first question.

I hate generative AI so much.

In the past a student would write something beautiful, something true, something pure, and I wanted to share it from the rooftop.

Now I'm tempted to say things like "if you actually wrote this, it's beautiful."

I just want to know who to thank.

How often do you think students involuntarily try to press: B, X, A, or spacebar when a teacher is introducing a lesson, or monologuing about something?

For when you are feeling "I need a burrito" sad.

Just keep these little tubs of spud in the pantry, add boiling water, wait a minute then stir in 2 tablespoons of pub cheese.

I haven't been writing in my traditional spaces

It's because I'm consumed w/ live narrative writing aka RPGs. I GM several games and I'm mulling its meaning in modern ELA instruction.

Hi. For those of you who don't know me on #EduSky

I'm David Theriault and I'm a high school English teacher in California. I've been teaching 5 classes of 37 students for 30 years now. I've done a few things, but mostly I've just tried to be curious and compassionate.

For the past four years, I've been using this gratitude email activity with HS ELA students during the week before Thanksgiving break. Feel free to make a copy or modify it as needed.

A former student wrote something in an unexpected space. He expects nothing but a space to write and explore...

I join with the same mindset...
