Title: ’By the Ocean Front’

Artist explanation: This piece took me months to complete in various stages. Very large for its kind, I constantly needed to remain focused and contemplate the big picture. Mostly drawing with pastel pencils etc., it is easy to get blinded by small details that you cannot see from a distance, or add colors that stand out too much from afar. Much time was spent observing it on my easel from my chair.

The motif surprised me. Always starting with a blank space without sketch, I soon realized that the mid-section brought out scenery from my many trips to Northern California. Yet the sky felt very much like Scandinavia where I live. My work always becomes a blend of my experiences and feelings. What comes out, comes out. I have made paintings where the buildings look like New York City, a bridge taken from Prague, the sky is Norwegian, and the trees resemble the ones I’ve seen in Barcelona! This piece has a strong blend of Northern California and Norway to me.

The thematics of the piece with the man and woman on each side, is very «Munch-esk.» The beauty and drama of nature. The distance and silence between the man and woman—the longing, yet the complexity.

Moonlight by the Sea.' (1907) Harald Sohlberg worked with a simplified palette, frequently white, blue, red or green, which helped capture something of the Nordic light. He insisted each painting have one ‘dominant’ colour, which he would exaggerate with emotive effect.1

Have a #painting, if you will. "Right Turn, Limerick" came out of a day cycling from Limerick city into Tipperary. In the village of Cappamore I was quite taken by the signs for a right turn back towards Limerick city, but then I'm always quite taken by signs. #SpeirGorm #ArtYear #UrbanGaze

Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. Hard edge colours of blue, maroon, green and white, with highlights of blazing orange, depicting a view down a slightly curving street with 2-story white pub on left. Pile of kegs outside and pub signs protrude out. Other buildings suggested on the same side beyond, before the street bends left behind itself. Roofs are slate rendered in blue and maroon. Street surface is mid-blue with maroon sections. A pole on the left side of the street, half way down it, is effectively in the centre of the painting. On it is a street lamp a several overhead wires which arc to near buildings and across the street. A couple of cars are parked on both sides with a couple of vehicles driving away on the left side. Small single-storey building at end on the right side before 2 large dark green trees, behind which is grey-green hill under a pale blue sky. Left foreground has diamond street sign of black on yellow showing junction ahead has a right turn option and together with another diamond shaped sign further down the street stands out as the only use of yellow in the painting. Bottom right corner is bold orange, picking up small marks of orange elsewhere, and is where it is signed Liam Daly

Thank you. I use my own life and emotions to express through color and motif. My artistic inspirations are many, but Vincent, Munch, Matisse, Chagall etc., are always there. Nature and symbolism are also important.

To expand on my previous post/photo:

Whenever I see the sun reflection in a straight line, I think of Edvard Munch (see photos 2-4). It’s special to consider that he walked and painted on these shores. If in Oslo, make certain to visit the new Munch Museum.
