This book is pure enlightenment. An African History of Africa by Zeinab Badawi. I basically had no concept of African History other than ancient Egypt and the European history of slavery and colonialism. I'm a wiser man now. Can't recommend it enough!

Someone should tell Trump that Alex Garland's film Civil War was fiction and should preferably remain as such.
"This embrace of Lost Cause propaganda is more than just a quirk. It’s MAGA policy. The perversion of Civil War history is of a piece with the Big Lie about the 2020 election, which Trump still insists he won, and the January 6 attack on the Capitol." — @playtyperguy.com
Trump's Confederacy rises again
The Lost Cause doesn't seem all that lost anymore.

A great spoof film should always have a proper, exciting plot to carry all the silliness. For this reason I think that The Naked Gun with Liam Neeson is actually better than the original.

Croc is not a really good movie, but it's got good crocodile action and Michael Madsen is cool and charismatic as always. Thanks for this recommendation @purecinemapod.bsky.social !

Not nearly as bad as the IMDb score suggests. I'm not really interested in the contrived idealists vs capitalists plot, but the big killer crocodile is a joy. Some kills are seriously good, and some (...

I'm on a Michael Madsen tribute week, thanks to @purecinemapod.bsky.social and their brilliant QT-led "ten unknown gems" episode.
This is a really good thriller with Madsen at his best as the villain.

I completed the Pedro Pascal challenge in just three evenings. It helps that I work in a cinema and didn't have to pay.

140 years later, the concept of liberty would be dismantled.
The Statue of Liberty arrived in NYC on this day 140 years ago, disassembled into 350 pieces. It was reassembled & erected on its pedestal the next year. These images in the Library's Prints and Photographs Division show pieces of the statue while it was still being made.

Heat as a cheap TV movie with all the same story beats, but mediocre acting and little human depth. Interesting for a Michael Mann completist, but if you want entertainment, just watch Heat again.
