When we lived in VA, we would occasionally find an heirloom apple called Arkansas Black in the local co-op (dark red, rock hard, very sweet - used to slice them very thin and make apple chess pie).
Don’t know if they’d be hardy enough for Zone 4, but would be worth it, trust me.
