New video! I analysed a decade of The Game Awards to uncover the surprising trends behind what games win, and answer if there's a TGA equivelent to "Oscar Bait".

Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare (GBC)

This is a product of spectacular ambition and spectacle, and that has to be enough to carry you through this game. I’m amazed that the devs attempted to bring TNN to GBC, and that it looks familiar if you squint, even though it does make big sacrifices

1982 was very early for Japanese adventure games, with only a small number of releases. Takara Building Adventure thus is one of the earliest adventure games in Japanese, but it was not generally available...

Takara Building Adventure Part 1 (1982)
The last time I wrote about a Japanese game was with The Palms, where I mentioned skipping over two games from 1982 because there were no copies available. This was one of them. Brief history recap…

Metal Garden

The architecture absolutely steals the show. The game's single level designer was able to impart such a sense of scale, not just through the art direction, but also in the ways that the side paths just kept branching beyond all expectations. A masterwork in level design

this is all in flux, but i thought i'd do a design thread on interesting ideas for some scrying / information skills!

in general, information based magic + skills have a lot of potential in 2d games, and are often underutilized. i'm experimenting with this a lot in [the coiled sun].

here is ECHO.
Silent Hill

Overall, Silent Hill was a great time. There are some things that I wish the game conveyed better that caused me to waste a lot of time (I missed the rifle, I was stuck on the school for 3 hours because the piano wouldn’t open), but it’s best moments are quite tense

Here's a fix compilation for another Lithtech game, Monolith's "Shogo: Mobile Armor Division", their FPS with mechas inspired by Japanese animes. All compatibility fixes tested and working out-of-the-box:

One of the best rpgs I've played this year is Betrayal at Club Low. Each of your stats are represented by a dice, and instead of flatly leveling up a stat, you instead upgrade individual faces on your stat dice. With Cosmo D's visual flair, this game's great

Not to promote my own stuff, but I have been doing a lot of game dev this year. I've been putting out more games on my itch page, but one of the best I have released this year is Waterflow, a Doom poetry map about the limitations of language. I'm very proud of this

Technically this next game is only a demo, but act 1 of NARRENSCHIFF was spectacular and it's one of my most anticipated games. It's a queer psychological horror game about confronting the injustices done to your mother, and it has some wild narrative sequences.

Kaizen: A Factory Story is also incredible. It's from the old Zachtronics team at a new studio, and it's another polished take on automation and manufacturing. This sort of open ended puzzle game is my favorite, and this team makes them extremely well

The really cool thing about s k u l l is that it is only playable during October. It's like a little spooky apparition that floats in for this time of year and then floats away for 11 more months
s k u l l

A really cute little game about exploring a level to find gems. Fighting enemies is simple, perhaps a little too simple, but if you completely master it you will never die. I died a lot, usually because I forgot what key moved me in what direction on the isometric keyboard

I found the core of this movie to be intensely relatable. The ways in which we change as we move through life can be haunting, and I can relate to the protagonist's angst about their own image and how it's perceived as it changes. We must be allowed to change, and thus, to live
