My list of discarded (but still beloved) hyperfixations is long and varied. Currently mostly into cats, cemeteries, and Star Trek.

Hey… Why the heck does almost every science-fiction show — and some non-science-fiction shows — always have an episode where cast members get kidnapped into a fight club? Why is that?

Greg Bovino, Kristi Noem, and DHS need to answer for their unchecked attacks on Chicago residents.

ICE is an out-of-control danger to our peaceful communities.

The images from the Sun-Times today speak for themselves.
The minimal level of paperwork involved in immigrating at that time is stunning. If someone decided to just give a new name at Ellis Island, no one was going to care. No one could require anyone to start using a different name. There was no infrastructure around that. Immigration was extremely easy.
A lot of families started changing their names in that time because of the war to distance themselves from German sounding names. But it wasn’t done by the government; it was a choice made by the families. I do a lot of local history research and this is very consistently true.

Now, more than ever, it's important to understand why so many the myths we tell ourselves about immigration are actually very harmful.

First of all, your great-great-grandparents names *were not changed* at Ellis Island. No one there had the authority to do that.

I hope people remember that the @nytimes.com has actively worked to try to sabotage Mamdani at almost every single turn. ACTIVELY. They've been the NY Post.
Amerigo Vespucci was right there.
Every time I see things like this, I remember the story – I can’t remember if it was a documentary or a news item – about the children of survivors of the Killing Fields who refused to believe that that had happened. Their own children thought they were making it up. I think about that a lot lately.
If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
What I can’t remember is if they had us read the story first or if they showed it to us cold. I kind of think they showed it to us cold which feels insane, but not unlikely
They also made us watch the film of “the lottery.”
Oh my God! Thanks for the flashbacks!

Israeli settlers continue to wage war on Palestinians in the West Bank and elsewhere. They are breaking into people's homes, stealing their stuff, trashing their homes and sometimes kidnapping and killing people. This is happening NOW. People should know this.

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.
Lmao is this supposed to be a bad thing?

I refuse to become a person who drowns in such deep cynicism that they lose all ability to discern anything useful about what's happening around them. Defenses formed from harm can protect our energy and prevent future harm, but they can easily tip into deeply unhealthy, isolating conspiracism.
Agree! Especially the aunts. They’re much less warm in the book, but it is much more magic realism than the movie which is magic magic
Got an autoreply from a coworker that she’s unavailable because she’s out for the half-day and Monday holiday and… we set these for in and out of office people separately so I’m not sure why she’s telling all of us who are also out for the half-day and indigenous peoples day where she is.
