The long-running ideological war on libraries, education, and government workers is not separate from AI boosterism. It is the same ideological war on human knowledge and expertise. In some cases AI is being used to directly supercharge this effort:

It occurs to me that as everything continues to become increasingly siloed, sports remains one of our last bastions of a shared monoculture that still can be experienced communally

You look at every culture that's ever existed and the running theme is everyone pretty much just wants to play/dance to music, make art, eat stewed meat wrapped in flat bread, and tell stories about the shapes we find in the stars. Somehow we turned that into wars and overtime and profit margins.
My problem with everything is that I know For A Fact that the purpose of life is frivolity. It is to fool around & pursue joy.

As you cancel streaming services, here is a casual reminder that only 16% of Americans read for pleasure anymore, and your local library has hundreds or thousands of books you haven't read.

They would love to see you stop by and renew your library card.

My 80-year-old aunt told me she "got tired of streaming" and is borrowing DVDs from her library again.

So I checked it out and they have an amazing selection. Blu-rays too, from Criterion, Kino Lorber and other boutique labels.

This is wildly inspirational. I honestly find today’s writers are … completely boring and anesthetized. It’s not just that we’re flattening culture and writing, but people’s personalities too.

i can't help but feel like this is the inevitable result of an education system that has (for decades) placed a disproportionate value on the results of standardized tests and final grades, instead of on the *process* of learning itself.

what a sad elegy for our societal priorities.
my college kid was heartbroken when on the first day of class the professor said "I used to spend 3 weeks teaching this part, but just have AI create it for you and we'll skip it." Skipping the most creative part of the work. The part my kid most looked forward to.

Gimme handmade zines, let's write poems on the back of receipts, a watercolor using found pigments, book clubs on subway cars; let the revolution be not just analog but antiquated, baby. Bring back quills!
