I just went to Google Maps, and the Gulf of Mexico is now labelled
"Gulf of Mexico

Are other people seeing that? I am in Switzerland, but nothing changed when I used a VPN that indicates that I am in New York.
Did Google step back from their change?

On April 25, 1945, three days before Mussolini was executed, the Comitato di Liberazione Nazionale Alta Italia [Committee of National Liberation for Northern Italy], the coordinating body for the partisan resistance to Italian Fascism for the area, approved the following Decree: 1/

This was the very same square where, a year earlier, partisans had been executed by the Fascists. The display was meant to symbolize the defeat of Fascism and serve as a warning.

Let us hope modern Fascists come to fear that warning as well. 7/

The bodies of Mussolini, Petacci, and the other executed Fascists were then taken to Milan and displayed publicly in Piazzale Loreto. 6/

The decision to execute Mussolini and Petacci was made quickly. There was no formal trial. On April 28th, they were shot by a firing squad in the small village of Giulino di Mezzegra, near Dongo. Other captured Fascist officials were also executed. 5/

In April 1945, with the end of World War II in Europe imminent, Benito Mussolini, the Italian dictator, attempted to flee Italy with his mistress, Clara Petacci, and other Fascist leaders. They were trying to reach Switzerland, hoping to escape capture and retribution. 2/

Remember: Fascism rarely ends well. Not even for the Fascists. But many many people can be harmed before the Fascists are removed. Here is a little history about the original Fascist, Benito Mussolini: 1/

Compare the (non)reaction to this to “Hillary’s emails”: H had a few low-level classified documents on her private email server. Elon has transferred millions of govt records relating to private persons to his own servers!
Musk and his people are conducting data theft from the federal government. That's a crime against the government (which of course won't be prosecuted) and a crime against every individual whose data he is stealing (which should be prosecuted by State Attorneys General).

With Musk now holding the keys to most US e-services (including the US gov’t payment service), it’s time to move our online services out of the US! This post contains a link to an excellent list of non-US online services, such as email, VPN, password management and secure messaging services.

I can't say I am surprised or even disappointed. But I am saddened - I first saw Pete in the Arizona Fall League in 2018. Pete brought this on himself when he rejected the 7-year extension at the beginning of last year and hired Boris.

Congress needs to reestablish the Office of Special Counsel that was created by the 1978 Ethics in Government Act, which was allowed to expire in 1999 - just before Bush II took office. Of course, with the Republicans controlling the House, Senate and Presidency, it will never happen.

Can anyone tell me why I, someone who does NOT make a living on social media, keep getting "followers" who have neither posts nor replies on their profile? There has to be a scam somewhere here, by I can't understand what it is. Of course I just block them, but it still takes a bit of time.

I was unaware until today that an H-1B employer is not required to recruit US workers before hiring a non-US H-1B worker for a job, nor is the H-1B employer required to show that there are no available US workers for the job. I am not MAGA (far from it), but that seems very wrong to me.

This is the best message I have read about resisting the urge to give up. As @billybragg.bsky.social says, “Those who have long wished to reverse the tide of progressive reform are poisoning the discourse by promoting mistrust and division.” I’m 74, and it has been thus all my life. Resist!
Sitting down to compose a hopeful message for 2025 is a tough ask given the year we’ve just had. Even glib sentiments are hard to come by. The defeat of pro-democracy forces in the US presidential election still weighs like a heavy anchor on my attempts to move on. 1/11

I’ve never written a screenplay, but I have an idea for one. Working title: The Grifter and the Call Girl. It starts out as a wacky 60’s/70’s comedy, but takes a dark turn when the grifter’s mental state starts declining and his growing anger moves him to embrace Fascism.Anybody want to bankroll me?
