there was say, a predicted apocalypse that didn't happen?
What did they do about that?
LAURA NASRALLAH: I can answer because this happens a lot in Christianity.
More recently we have more data on it.
So you know usually the answer is, well, we
didn't understand the divine properly--
that we somehow missed the boat.
And it's very dangerous to say the world will end on a given day.
I think it was like 10 years ago that there were billboards
all over the Boston area saying that the world is
going to end on this particular day.
And it didn't.
And so then a community has to sort of regroup and cope
with that cognitive dissonance.
Usually it still respects its leader so it's
like, well, there's places in the scripture where it says
no one knows the time and the hour.
So well, we got it wrong.
We shouldn't have tried to be so precise.
So there are ways of coping with that embarrassing lack of an end.
ALYSSA GOODMAN: What's interesting is you
could interpret that as uncertainty.
We didn't completely understand the model, if you will.
LAURA NASRALLAH: Yeah, thank you, that's a real insight.
ALYSSA GOODMAN: But you know, I mean, that's what
happens to climate scientists, right?
If they say the temperature is going to go up by a quarter of a degree
and it goes up by an eighth of a degree, then climate skeptics
go you don't know what you're doing.
You were off by some number.
So if they were off by 1,000 years on the apocalypse,
they could still be right.
Let's hope not.

The rice we used for the peyeum ketan we made was soaked for too long, so it retained too much water. So, the fermentation worked too fast, taking only about two days, and it became alcoholic quickly—almost couldn't keep up lol
