Shovel-ready Luas and Dart projects delayed “to free up funding for more roads”
The Government is delaying shovel-ready public transport projects such as Dart+ South West and Luas Finglas in order "to free up funding for more roads", the Green Party's transport spokesperson, Cllr Feljin Jose, has claimed. He said that this is a "disaster" that large new areas of housing in Dublin -- including a development of nearly 900 homes approved in Adamstown today and the major housing project at Poolbeg -- were being left without the promised transport links, forcing more people into cars on the capital's congested roads.

That’s quite an own goal by Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien delaying the Finglas Luas by two years, and stalling on DART+ South West till 2030, on World Sustainable Transport Day, no less. Who needs Judicial Reviews when Fianna Fáil’s running the show?

DART+ South West is shelved until 2030. It has full planning approval since 2024, no judicial reviews and is ready to go but construction won't start until after 2030. A lot of housing around Adamstown and Clonburris built in anticipation of this upgrade.

Government goes cold on ordering new trains, so 41-year-old Dart fleet — breaking down daily — to keep causing issues for rail network for years
A conservative approach by the Department of Transport to ordering replacement Dart train carriages will lead to increased reliability issues on the Dublin rail network, likely cost the State more when the trains are ordered, and will delay the expansion of other train services, it has been claimed. Earlier this year, the Department of Transport claimed the delay in ordering the trains -- replacements for the existing 41-year-old Dart carriages, which are suffering daily breakdowns and affecting local and intercity services -- was due to a review of the National Development Plan.

Some nice light reading for us on the bus home! 😄

GALWAY TO MAYO RAIL LINK FUNDED

Some good news for Galway's railway. The Minister of State for Transport Seán Canney announced that funding for the reopenning of the Athenry <-> Claremorris railway will be included in the National Development Plan.

Dublin is in the process of leapfrogging Copenhagen in terms of removing the dominance of traffic in its city centre, while the Danish capital is sitting on its arse obsessing over the idea of new motorway tunnels to remove traffic.

Dublin already has nothing comparable to H. C. Andersens Blvd...

Good news today that Luas Finglas has been approved by An Coimisiún Pleanála. That's now five big rail projects approved in the last year and no clarity over funding and timelines.

The National Development Plan published in July contained no details.

"That's not possible, you can't do that. The trains have to run." Hauntingly similar conditions in Germany to those in Britain prior to the Hatfield rail disaster.

Dear friends in the EU: this is not inevitable, just as liberalisation is not a precursor to better railways.

Now that the 8100 DARTs are being repainted you can see where the all the components are. They’re really nicely labelled.

Am I the only one who cares about this? Probably…

Ireland's Taoiseach (prime minister), has just shockingly said: “I don’t think we can mitigate for climate change" but it somehow didn't even make the headline: www.independent.ie/business/tec... @michaelemann.bsky.social
Taoiseach says some climate projects will not be fulfilled because they risk polarising society
Taoiseach Micheál Martin has rowed back on climate change commitments, saying Ireland may not be able fulfil all current initiatives due to the polarising effect it could have on society.

As of 10am, wind has made up 70% of indigenous generation and renewable generation in total (biomass, hydro, wind, solar) has equalled 85.5% of the island's electricity demand. There's some exporting, gas generation's at a minimum. Looks set to last for the day.

A big blanket VAT cut? It's a bad idea. Better to give smarter, more targetted supports for cafes and restaurants.

We've set out a way to give more to small businesses while spending about a third of what the government are planning.

Be smart: do more, spend less!

Renewable generation (that's biomass, hydro, wind, and solar) never dipped below 50% of electricity demand yesterday. Overnight, it exceeded 100% for a little while around 1am.

This is still rare outside of the winter: we saw it in Aug/Sep 2023, only in winter in 2024, and now in Aug/Sep 2025.
