Ah the rave im going to tonight is at a venue that was a gay Halloween dance/sex party last night. I sure hope they hosed it down / I wonder if the promoters coordinated on sharing decor & AV; they only have 18 hours to flip the room! (& don’t forget the hosing)

Got to the eagle early, had some fun catching up, dancing, seeing the gay slutty costumes. Saw an adorable twink scarecrow. The church st strip was absolutely impenetrable all night. I am too old & it is too crowded to brave at this point. But overall: very halloweenie

The audio was fucking atrocious though. “Oh we used diagetic elements as a purposeful choice in lieu of score” fuck you. Hire a fucking composer. A 50hz hum sidechained to the dialogue track is a poor excuse for a “soundtrack”. If I ever meet this director I would punch him for that alone.

I said aloud, “this is one of the most homophobic films I’ve ever seen” - but it’s an honest portrayal of suburban homosexuality. Three hotdogs apiece, separate wayfair wingbacks, daytime tv? This is how far queers have fallen. My god.

I suppose a greater film than Eddington though, truly. In many ways it wears its influences on its sleeves: the “shining door moment”, the “Blair witch basement” scene, etc. But: I don’t think it cheats its audience. For all my complaints, the characterization is unimpeachable

It cannot possibly mean to be how it comes across. A profoundly nihilistic film; even moreso than Eddington. But, perhaps: this is the time we find ourselves in. A deeply mournful thing!
Maybe it is as negative as I perceive it to be. Perhaps it is! My god. A shotgun blast of despair.

Something orofoundly uneasy about Weapons. Such an ending cannot but allude to the Bacchae; yet, it treats such weight so briefly, slightly…though it juxtaposes this tragic cruelty with quotidian suburban life…is this in itself the message? Flippancy? There’s a deep core to this film that’s missing

The sound design & mixing of Weapons is the most hostile thing I’ve encountered in a movie in my entire life. I don’t know if I can watch this whole thing. This is like perfectly configured to inflict sensory discomfort on me. Unbearable

Simultaneous terror & tonic: Tuchman’s Guns of August is a reminder that nothing is so idiotic that it won’t be pursued to unthinkable cost by fools. So, there are no strictly “unprecedented times” in that respect.
This fact augurs extremely poorly for our own times, however. Which is scary.
