One argument I used to make to my students about why it was important to learn history (and historical thinking) is that someone was always going to be trying to tell you things were natural or had always been this way and that you needed to be able to see that as an exercise of power.

I’d add, “it’s easy to miss so much of what came before you arrived. Assume the debates, worries, thrills you have, have all happened before. If you can, try to make real connections to those who are memory-keepers. Most who have survived & stayed want to share.”

yesterday was the last class meeting of the quarter and i didn’t get emotional during class but i did tear up a bit later while reading their exit tickets. such a wonderful bunch. and also im just so glad that teaching is as wonderful and meaningful to me as i have always felt it would be.

i think it comes from the things i had to learn to deal with my adhd. before and still after medication because to me at least my adhd is profound. i had to learn how to make it as easy as possible to do the correct thing.

i love teaching first year writing, i really, really, truly do!!!! and also oh my god, i want to teach creative writing so bad. i mourn the fact that i have to have a published book to be trusted to teach it here all the time.

everything else aside. the absolute best barometer of How I’m Doing continues to be the state of my room. the messier it is, the more i’m probably working myself into knots about stuff, regardless of what’s happening around me 😭

i’ve been slowly learning korean for a while now and have a bunch of reasons for wanting to learn — my only MAJOR goal was enough fluency to comfortably read korean lit. however. unfortunately for me, i think that’s changed 😭

life is stressful and i have depression. but by god i had my life changed by those quotes about self destruction not being rebellion when that’s what the world wants from you. it’s a very weary and tired spite that keeps me going sometimes, but that’s ok, so long as i do keep going
